Wigmore - Murphy - Liscarroll

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone has any information on Olympia Wigmore of Liscarroll? Olympia married William Murphy of Egmont, Churchtown approx 1837 and settled they in Liscarroll. William was a farmer and locally famed as a weight thrower. They had 4 sons all with the middle name Wigmore - Daniel, John, Stephen and James who all became priests in the United States (Daniel and John became prominent clergy in New Hampshire and Maine and Stephen and James died young). I suspect given location, names and time there may be a relationship to James Wigmore and Kate O' Callaghan of Liscarroll (though Olympia would be a very unusual 1st name for that part of the world)

I am related to Daniel Wigmore of Highfort, Liscarroll. My great grandfather, James Wigmore was his cousin and lived at Feohanagh, just over the border in Co Limerick.  I have never heard of Olympia but know a little about the family in Liscarroll and would be pleased to help if I can.

Thanks for your note. I'm pretty certain that Olympia is related to Daniel Wigmore of Highfort, Liscarroll - she is possibly his aunt - but despite trawling the gravestones of Liscarroll and the parish records of Liscarroll and Churchtown I haven't been able prove the connection (the names of her children James, Stephen and Daniel are all Wigmore names and each son took Wigmore as middle name)

I have looked through my research and don't think I can give you anything of much use.  I do remember seeing something about a Chalice given to the church in Liscarroll and I think it was to do with the priests you wrote about.  When I went there I spoke to Dan Canty in the village shop at Liscarroll who was very helpful and seemed to know a lot about the Wigmore family.  I don't know if you have any way of getting in touch with him?  I have a letter from Canon John Wigmore, who was Daniel's brother and talks about his grandmother but, unfortunately doesn't name her.  I am still trying to piece together all the bits of the family and have a few guesses which I'm still trying hard to confirm.  I can't see anyone named Olympia in my bit of the family, but I'm still not sure exactly how our lot are related to "Cousin Danny".  I know my grandfather used to go and stay with him at Highfort. I will let you know if I find out anything further.

Try searching for Olympia Mary Batterberry on ancestry.com.  As it's such an unusual name, she may be who you are looking for.  There is a picture of her with a Michael Murphy.

Hi Rebecca,

Thank you. I will try and get in touch with Dan Canty (he is a cousin of my father so it shouldn't be too difficult...I hope). I know about the Chalice - it was given by one of the priest son's of Olympia. I've also seen the letter from Canon Wigmore (its to a Miss Madigan) and it mentions George Ellard (George may be the son of Edmund Ellard and Honora Wigmore who emigrated to Boston, Edmund was the witness at Olympia & William Murphy's marriage) and most interestingly William Murphy of Maghuist - William & Olympia had a son William but I have no idea where or what Maghuist is. The grandmother in question may be Nora Buckley who I have as married to  John Wigmore. I have basic tree of the Liscarroll WIgmores I'd be happy to share.

Mystery solved - Olympia was born to John Wigmore & Hanora Buckley in 1813 - her name was incorrectly transcribed as Humphrey on rootsireland. Olympia's brother was Stephen Wigmore father of Canon John Wigmore and Daniel Wigmore of Highfort. Found a impressive obituary for Stephen who die in the early 1900s -  seems the Wigmores were descended from Plantagenet Kings of England.
