Census look up please - Brown
« on: Monday 29 October 12 03:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi All   :)

I do not have access to the census and was wondering if anyone does and would mind doing a search for me (census 1841).  My GGGrandfather was George Brown, transferred to Australia as a Convict.  We have only just found him, as you can imagine, tracing such a common name is not easy.  So far I have the below info, from his convict records

George Brown, born c 1820 - Marden in kent
father John; mother. charlotte; b. charles, william; s. elizabeth, eliza and charlotte clapham

Transported for stealing 2 coats from a cart
Prior convictions 7 days for apples; drunk 1 mth; 6 mths for a donkey
Place of sentencing maidstone 1847 (I think)

George married a fellow convict in 1853, Bridget was sent out from Ireland at the age of 16, they had 3 children who were placed in an orphanage in Hobart, once they got the three girls back, the family moved to Victoria, changed their names and went on to have many more children.  The convict past was buried and it has taken us a lot of digging to uncover it.  I am very interested in going further back, which is why I would like to see the census from that time.

If anyone has any other suggestions for tracing this line, I would be very grateful.  I really had given up this line as a brick wall, never to be scaled.

Thanks in advance

Lones

The 1841 census does not give parish of birth and with such a common name it's going to be difficult to pinpoint the correct George BROWN.

Marden History Group has a brilliant website which may prove useful.

Finding a local newspaper report may be helpful but I'm not sure it will add much more than you have already.

Thank you Bearkat

That is my problem, all my ancestors had common names....grrrrrrrr.  I appreciate your advice.  I will check out the link you have supplied and see what I can find.  It has taken us years to track down the correct convict due to the common name thing, so I won't lose hope that we might find him again.

Thank you for your time and advice

Kindest regards

Lones

Hi Mr NZ

He was definitely born c 1820, his age is given on his convict records, also he died in the early 1900's in his eighties.  I haven't got my records on me, but that is the gist.  Have you got one born 1800?

Cheers

Good luck with finding him.  Mine changed his name to Golding and moved from Tasmania to Victoria.  It took up forever to track him down. It woudl probably have been worse had he stayed as George Brown, there are thousands of them.  Good luck.... :)
