James Bell c 1909 Dundee
« on: Monday 29 October 12 01:35 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace the Scottish ancestors of Natalia Sanchez Bell whose grandfather Ramon Santiago Bell Jaras was born 3/10/1932 in Santiago, Chile and died 17/5/2005 in London. He was the son of James Bell born Dundee c 1909 and emigrated to Chile. His wife was Consol Jaras. Ramon had a sister named Angelica. Any help would be very gratefully received.

The index at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk says that there were 7 James Bells born in Dundee between 1906 and 1911.

Presumably James Bell and Consol Jaras were married in Chile? Is there a marriage record/certificate, and if so, have you seen it, and if so does it give a name for James Bell's parents?

If you have a date for the marriage, you could check to see if there was a marriage announcement in the Dundee Courier. Dundee Public Library has back numbers of this.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I've just noticed zunilda couldn't have bee james 's mother she would only have been 9 yrs old when he was born!? unless the person has entered her birth date wrongly

One of the problems with trees published at A******y and elsewhere online - no-one checks to see that the information is correct. You can use them as a guide to where to look, but no more.

Actually, if James was born in August 1909 and Zunilda was born in 1894, she would have been 14 or 15, not 9, but that still seems rather young.

You can get the birth certificate of James Bowman Bell at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk at modest cost. It will tell you when and where his parents were married.

The Bowman Bell connection is definitely correct - thanks. Only info I have on James Bell 1909 Dundee is that he emigrated to Chile so presumably met and married his wife Consol Jaras there. Their son Ramon Santiago Bell Jaras was a history professor and was held for 8 months by the Chilean Junta, initially at Quriquina Island and later in Chillan, Nuble Province  but due to having a British Passport C335889 he was able to come to Britain where he became a renowned artist making wood carvings. he died in 2005 in London.

Hello Lynne

Thanks to DORAN54 and my nosiness, I went off and downloaded James Bowman Bells birth  entry.

He was born on 07 Aug 1909 at the maternity Hospital in Dundee to James Bell (Shipmaster) and Zunilda Albertina Bell (M S Silva).

Parents were married on the 20th June 1908, in Iquique, which is a port in northern Chile.

If you pm me I can forward the birth entry.

Regards,

Steve    :)

Hi,
I am new to this. I have been doing some research at PRO in London for the last year.
I reach a point where I don't make any progress.
Can somebody have any information of my family which is spread all over the world.

My grand father James Bell was born in Dundee, Fife, Scotland 7-Aug-1909, his father was James Bell a shipmaster born in Lower Largo Scotland 2-mar-1877.
My GG Grandfather was married to Christina Horn born 1852.
They married on the 20th Oct 1875 and had 3 children: James (1877), Christina (1879) and Robert (1881).
My GG Grandmother, Christian, died in 1885 and James (my GG Grandfather) in 1886.
In 1903 my GGranfather passed his 1st mate exam in Dundee.
In 1905 my G Grandfather passed his shipmaster exam in Sydney Australia.
In 1907 he appears in Chile (where I was born) and married Zunilda Silva.
In 1909 Zunilda is in Dundee giving birth to my Grandfather.
