It is possible to find British type names on Chilean records. Looking up the popular John Smith I found not John but Edwin Juan Schofield Smith. His parents seem very British to me! The site is below - For example type in John Smith and on the "Life Events" section click on "Any" then Search. Scroll down a little then Edwin will come up and click onto him for further information.

Kiko
The mother's name was Margaret Lawson Bisset (perhaps 2 t's) the child's name was Ina G Bisset, but Ina could also be a shortened form of some name like Thomasina, Georgina, etc.
The father's christian name is unknown at this stag, and I think the child was born in 1898.
Thank you

Hi Jan,

Family Search are indexing Chilean births from 1885 to 1900 right now (I participate in this indexing process). No record for Bisset is available yet online. So I guess sometime in the future (maybe next year?) it could appear. It will depend on where exactly she was born. Most of the records we have been indexing over the last months correspond to Central and Northern Chile, which is where (aside from Patagonia) most of the British settled.

Cheers,
Kiko

I have no idea whether the family were there for any length of time, the little girl, her mother Margaret and one year old brother were back living with Margaret's parent's at the time of the 1901 Scotland Census. I haven't checked 1911 yet.
Thanks for your help - looks like I will just have to be patient with this one.

Hi

The young son in 1901, Robert B L BISSETT b  abt 1900 Glasgow.

On SP there is rthe Birth indexed of Robert Bruce La BISSET, Lanarkshire

Picking the La (no more of the name fits on the index) is for either Lawson or Laurence (the latter being Margaret's maiden name).

There is this Passenger list:
"Oropesa", Arrived Liverpool 20 Oct 1906
Embarked Valparaiso:
Mr John G BISSET
Mrs Margaret BISSET
Master Laurence BISSET

No occupation stated - and no daughter with them  but interesting in light of Ina's middle initial being G ....and it wouldn't be uncommon for a child to be know by a middle name rather than the first given name.

Cheers
