1861 Name Index - Wolstencroft - please
« on: Sunday 29 May 05 23:22 BST (UK) »
I am wondering if John Amorias Wolstencroft appears in the index for the 1861 census, possibly in Liverpool. I am hoping to find him married to Ann (formerly) Clark who I think may have been born in Yorkshire, but I am not sure about this. All I know is that they had a daughter, Emma Maria Wolstencroft born 2 June 1864 at Croston Court, Liverpool. The number is unclear, but possibly number '1'.
John Amorias' occupation on the birth certificate is Seaman Merchant Navy, but on Emma Maria's marriage certificate in 1883, his occupation is Inn Keeper.

Emma Maria was married in Pickering, North Yorkshire, but I am not sure whether the whole family had moved there or whether it was just Emma. In 1871, I found her with Robert & Sarah Jane Dobson, in Sinnington, near Pickering, and she was down as their niece. Sarah Jane was the daughter of John Allanson & Sarah Clark, who had a sister, Ann, but if she was Emma Maria's mother, that would make her Sarah Jane's cousin, not niece. I am trying to sort out exactly how they were related, so any further information on Emma Maria's parents would be a great help. I have not found their marriage on FreeBMD, but finding them with or without any children in the census might help to narrow it down.

Many thanks
Ceci

Thank you JRedfern.

The 1861 census looks very interesting with Wilton being exactly where I expected Ann to have been born.

I wonder whether the submitter to familysearch tried to solve the same relationship problem and assumed that Ann's maiden name must have been Allanson which fits a lot better than Clark, or whether these are two separate families.

I am fairly confident that I have the right marriage & birth certificates for Emma Maria and therefore that Ann's maiden name was Clark. The marriage certificate has her marrying Thomas Hood and later that year, Sarah Jane Dobson (Allanson) is remarried, and Emma Maria Hood and Thomas Clark are witnesses.

I did a search on the 1871 census on Ancestry and found this, but don't have access to the record. I wonder if anyone can look it up for me?

Ann Wolstencroft b.1833 Yorkshire, census place Lancashire

Thinking about it, I should probably start a new post for this.

Many Thanks
Ceci

Thanks again JRedfern.

I obviously shouldn't have started a new post. I had a reply to both within a couple of minutes of each other. Sorry, I really didn't mean to do that.

Great to have the father - in - law on this one. I can rule it out, but it also shows that there were a lot more Wolstencrofts than I thought and with the same first names.

Many thanks for your help,
Ceci
