Banyard
« on: Saturday 27 October 12 10:36 BST (UK) »
Good Morning,

I am trying to help a friend trace his Banyard ancestors back to England.

What we know:
George Banyard's gravestone from Bethel Cemetery, Claremont, Ontario, Canada reads:
GEO. BANYARD SR.
DIED
NOV.24, 1867
AGED 49 Y'RS 11 MOS

From the 1861 census in Pickering County, Ontario, Canada
George Banyard, age 40, born England, occupation tailor

From the gravestone, we estimate George's birth about Dec. 1817.  The best fit that we have found is George Banyard, son of Matthias Banyard and Mary Wigg born 13 Dec 1817 in East Dereham, Norfolk.  There is another George Banyard, son of Charles Banyard and Frances Bradfield born 10 Dec 1817 also in East Dereham but our research shows that this George Banyard died 21 Apr 1840 in East Dereham.

We have searched all available Banyard wills from this area hoping to find a mention of a George Banyard in Canada without success.

We are struggling to prove (or disprove) the link between the George Banyard who died in Canada to the George Banyard born in East Dereham.

Are there any living male Banyards from this area?  We could propose a Y-chromosone DNA test to see if we are heading down the correct path.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks!
David

Trish,

Thank you for all the information.

I wish that I had a way to confirm that the George Banyard who died in Canada is the same George Banyard in East Dereham.  I have just seen too may instances where someone has made the wrong link back to the UK only to spend countless hours tracing the wrong family.

Regards,

David

I think you can be fairly sure in this instance he is the right George.
DOB/POB is Correct
George occp Tailor is with Matthiias in 1841.
Matthias is a Brother of George Baptised Jsn 1818, Birth 13 Dec 1817.
This George, Occp, Tailor, does not appear in any English Census after this.
Matthias's 1846 Marriage confirms his Father as Matthias occp Baker.
No Family Trees for the Banyards have any info on George other than his Baptism.

Do Canadian Marriage/Deaths Certs not have any info on George Parents?

Hi Trish,

Unfortunately, the recording of death certificates in Ontario began in 1869.

I feel that the linkage is correct but I would like some further evidence but I may have to be content with the little that we know.

Thanks!
