RAF photo, possible regiment number?

Hi my great uncle William Thomas Roberts born in 1923 in Llanhilleth Monmouthshire Wales was in the RAF and I've been trying to find information on him for a while with no luck. My auntie told me that she thought he had two stripes and that he was on a short service. I assume it was during the second world war but not sure.

Today I visited a relative who gave me a photograph of him with his whole, what I assume was called, regiment. There are five rows of men in uniform stood in front of a building that has the number 581 painted on it. I was just wondering if it was possible that this number has anything to do with his regiment and so could help me find some more information about his service.

Could anyone give me any information please? Or give me some ideas of where to look next?

It might be an aid if you could upload the image for all to view, indeed the number could be significant. Without the image it's difficult to help fully.

His record will still be with MOD archives you can apply for a copy by looking at the Veterans Agency website and supplying certain details

More likely to be a squadron than a regiment.  Perhaps 581 Squadron?

I'm not entirely sure how to upload image but if you reply to your post, it gives you the option to browse your pc then add image, below the message box. Obviously you will have to upload/ scan the image to your pc first.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply.
My scanner isn't working so I've had to take photos of the photos, unfortunetly they haven't turned out very well so they're not very clear. I've tried to attach them and post this message a few times but an error message keeps coming up. I'll have to try again another time or when my scanner is working.
