REID (Read, Reed) in Simcoe Co. Ontario

I'm researching the family of Joseph REID and his wife Margaret Boyd. They are found in the 1861 census for Rama, Simcoe Co. Ontario aged 60, weaver (Joseph) and wife Margaret age 35. Both born Ireland.

 i have reason to believe that Joseph was married previously to Roseanne Brown and had at least two sons (robert and Dickson/Dixon) both born Co. Tyrone Ireland.

Joseph disappears from census records between 1861 and 1871 but so far no death record has turned up. If he died before 1869 it is in the period when death registration was not in place.

Basically I hope to find out more about Joseph's origins in Ireland. I believe his 2nd wife Margaret was part of the Boyd family from Kilea, Co. Derry, Ireland. No proof and I'm still working on finding more.

Joseph's dob is circa 1801, died 1862-1871.
Margaret was born ca 1824 died 1885 in Simcoe Co. I believe her parents may have been john Boyd & Esther/Essie Coates.

Good morning eillo,

I checked the OCFA site and there were 4 Joseph Reids listed as being buried in Simcoe Co., 2 of which are possibles. Here is the link: http://ocfa.islandnet.com/ocfa-search.php. I would contact the cemetery administration at each cemetery and ask for Joseph's records to see if it matches up with your ancestor.

Rama is a small rural place, Orilla Ontario is the next reasonably sized place closest to Rama so I would contact the local library there and see if the can dig up info on your ancestors in thier archives - town histories, newspaper announcement/obits, etc.. Similarly I would contact the Barrie public library.

 I am researching Joseph Reid born in Tyrone Ireland around 1801. He was a weaver and married to Margaret Boyd. He came to Canada and went to Simcoe County near Barrie, Ontario  and then moved to Rama where the family had a farm. Joseph's son Henry, my great grandfather, moved to Bracebridge where he and my grandfather Charlie grew up. Charlie married Emily Smith from Baysville and moved to North Bay where he worked as a conductor on the ONR trains. They had three sons, Harry,(VP Great West Life Kitchener ,  Phil (business manager Hill the Mover - Sudbury ) and Walter. Walter is my father who worked at Boart Longyear in North Bay (Technical Manager) until his death in 1985. Walter married Barbara Moseley-Williams from North Bay and had five sons who are all living today in North Bay.

in the 1901 census there is a Dixon Reid, farmer, born 1833 Ireland, recorded in the Hamilton Asylum:

In the 1871 census he is shown as aged 30 (discrepancy, but unlikely to be a different person), born Ireland, in Innisfil, Simcoe South, with wife Jane and several children; search for his name here and then click to see the image:

He was still in Innisfil in 1881. His eldest son is Joseph in 1871, but although the transcription shows a daughter Rosanna, I think it actually says Susaner.

The 1871, 1881 and 1901 censuses are also at familysearch, as are the marriages of some of his children, showing his wife as Jane Buchanan -- e.g. Thos Samuel Reid who married in 1898 in Mara.

Unfortunately, I don't see a death record, which might show his parents' names.

Margaret was born ca 1824 died 1885 in Simcoe Co. I believe her parents may have been john Boyd & Esther/Essie Coates.

This would seem to mean that Esther Reid married her maternal uncle (who was some 26 years younger than Margaret Boyd Reid but had the same parents).

Dickson Reid is shown as a farmer in 1861 at the age of 24 with wife Jane aged 24. They have a son Joseph aged one.They had a 50 acre farm in Innisfil , concession 8 part of lot 22. Dickson died in  1911 Simcoe County (penetanguishine) shows Joseph as father and Rosanna Brown (?) as mother.

Joseph Reid (spelled Read in the 1861 census - re township of Innisfil north of 9th concession) aged 60 is shown as married to Margaret Boyd aged 35 next birthday. Three children are listed Henry aged 7 (my great grandfather) Joseph aged 5 and Jane aged 3. Two other Reads are part of that household namely Hannah aged 18 and James aged 24. Perhaps Dixon, James and Hannah are part of Joseph's previous marriage to Roanna?

Dickson Reid's family follows in the census along with his wife Jane both aged 24 and their son Joseph age of 1. Dickson is also listed as Read instead of Reid here.

Dixon's headstone is in the sixth line cemetery in Innisfill 1833 to 1911 along with wife Jane Buchanan 1837 to 1922.

Hi there,

I live in Innisfil and have a little history book of Innisfil written in 1950.  In the book there is a Reid family....

From Tyrone, Ireland in 1834 sailed four Reid brothers, Adam, George, James and John.  Their 13 week crossing was made in the "Minnehaha."  They settled in Upper Canada, before moving on to Innisfil in 1848.  All settled and farmed around the 7th and 5th lines.  John then had 4 sons, William, Adam, Joseph and James.  Before John expired in 1867, he had established the first Orange Lodge in Innisfil on the S.E. corner at the 5th Line and Highway 11.  He name this same area "Tyrone Corner"
