Kerr Family
« on: Monday 10 September 12 12:05 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I'm new to this so please bear with me.  My name is Hugh Kerr and I'm trying to find some information on my Great Grandparents John Kerr and Martha Young.  They were married in Glenravel in 1891  both were RC's and I presume it was the Catholic church in this area that they were married.  My Great Grandfathers parents were John Kerr and Margaret McAvoy and my Great Grandmothers parents were John Young and Jane McCann?  I would be gratefull for any information that might point me in the right direction.

Kind Regards

Hugh

Hugh,
Welcome to Rootschat. I cannot find anything on the Kerr/McAvoy side but I have found that John Young married Jane McCann in Ballymena Registrars Office in 1857. The fathers'names were Matthew Young and Thomas McCann.

I think John Kerr's father was Robert, not John.  There's a John Kerr born in 1868 to father Robert and a Margaret McElvoy, up Ballycastle direction.

Thanks to kingskerswell and gaffy for their help.  I think you might have something there Gaffy I know my GG Grandmother is noted as Margaret McAvoy on the census when she and the family emigrated to Scotland but I think this may have been a mispronunciation as I have seen the name McElvoy mentioned before.

Thanks again.

Hugh

Gaffy, you're spot on John Kerr's father was Robert my mistake.  Robert is a commonly used name in our family (Grandfather, Uncle, Brother and many cousins).  Looks like you got the right one.  Grateful for anything else you find.

Kind Regards

Hugh

Familysearch shows John Kerr born on 28 November 1868 to Robert Kerr and Margaret McElvoy, brother Robert also born to this couple on 7 August 1872.

Glenravel Marriage
« Reply #7 on: Friday 14 September 12 21:12 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

My Great Grandparents, John Kerr and Martha Young, were married in Glenravel on the 20th August 1891.  A year or two after this they emigrated to Scotland and raised their family.  I would like to find out more about my Irish ancestors and the families they left behind in Antrim.  I would be grateful for any help anyone can offer.

Thanks

Hugh

Hi All,
