Lewis family
« on: Monday 22 October 12 16:21 BST (UK) »
Please does anyone have Yoxford parish records as I would like to find Henry Lewis, shoemaker, who claims to be born in Yoxford Suffolk in 1811 (2 census drift back to 1808). He marries Susan ?? (cannot find a marriage) and she comes from Halesworth, Suffolk. The oldest daughter, Betsy/ Elizabeth is born c. 1834 but not in St Sepulchre Middlesex.
Susan-1836: Fanny-1838: Eliza-1841: Catherine-1844:Harry -1846: George b.4th May, 1849: William  b.4th Oct 1852: Ellen b. 11th Jan 1858 .
The family are found in the census 1841-1901 in the St Sepulchre Middlesex area.
No one called Lewis seems to be in the 1841 census in Yoxford. There are no shoemakers called Lewis in the Yoxford or the Halesworth sections in Robsons Suffolk directory of 1839.

Have checked White's 1844 and no mention in either Halesworth or Yoxford.

By the way, Yoxford had a Wesleyan Methodist Chapel too, now converted into a house, as I drove past last week I noticed it is up for sale.

Every time I find an ancestor,
I have to find two more!

SUFFOLK - Pendle, Stygall, Pipe, Fruer, Bridges, Fisk, Bellamy, Sparham - all link to  Framlingham
DERBY - Bridges and Frost (originally Framlingham/Parham)
NOTTINGHAM - Lambert & Selby

LDN/MDX - Murray, Clancy, Broker, Hoskins, Marsden, Wilson, Sale

GGfather Michael Wilson born Cork, lived Fulham London - moved to Boston USA 1889, what happened next?

Thank you,
Yoxford's Wesleyan Methodist Chapel was built in 1888 so too late for the family to have used it. I see the chapel is grade two listed.
The family are in St Sepulchre Clerkenwell Middlesex by the 1841 census. I really need to check records  before about 1830.

The original Wesleyan Methodist chapel in Yoxford was built in 1834  :D

This is the one that is for sale at the moment, not the one built in 1888 which is also a B+B business.

Ah ! Thank you - motto to self - never trust the first google I find.
Then Henry Lewis marrying Susan just might be in those Primitive Methodist records, as well as the birth of their first daughter Betsy abt. 1834. Although Susan was from Halesworth.
Suffolk family history society has a marriage index for -YOXFORD 186 1813-1837- but it is not clear whether the Primitive Methodist marriages are included, does anyone know ?

Prior to 1837 all marriages took place in the Church of England with two exceptions, Quaker or Jewish ceremonies.

Hi Strow

I checked the Yoxford parish register but couldn't see a baptism there for Henry.  Also checked Halesworth for the marriage but it doesn't seem to have been at Yoxford or Halesworth.   Sorry  :(
