SHACKELL Family History
« on: Sunday 21 October 12 04:21 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am researching the Shackell family who were living in Tiverton Devon in the mid 1700's - 1800's.  In particular, I would like to learn about Thomas Shackell, a basketmaker.  If anyone knows anything about this person,  please let me know.

Hello tudorbriars, nice to meet you.

A tip: if you start by telling us what you know about your man (that we don't know unless you tell us), it could help a lot.

About when and where was he born, whom did he marry, where did he live, who were his kids, do you know whether he had siblings; what records do you have about him? You are probably wanting to find out who his parents were -- ?

Someday, someone who knows something about him might happen on your post (or you could have rare luck and it could happen sooner!) but more likely, someone who doesn't know about him might be able to help find some info. And everyone will be happy to try!

A Thomas Shackell birth was registered in Tiverton reg dist in 1839, and that Thomas is with parents Richard and Ann in Sampford Peverell in 1841. However, he seems to have become a grocer in St Pancras, London, with wife Amelia, by 1871. He seems to have been the only Thomas in Devon from that time onward, so yours must have been earlier.

Hi,

There is a Thomas Shackell in the 1881 census living in Weston Supermare, married to Jane Ann Shackell. His birth abt 1828 (Tiverton), shows he was an Inn Keeper.
There are a few other "Shackell's living in Devon in the mid 1800's

Any help?

Richard

Thanks for the replies.   ;To be specific, I am looking for the parents of a John Shackell born C1789 in Somerset/Devon.  I know he was married in Taunton in 1809 to Christian Miller - she died in 1816 and he remarried in the same year, again at Taunton - to Dinah Taylor.  John was a basketmaker, and I suspect his father may have been Thomas Shackell of Tiverton, who was an apprentice basketmaker in 1771.  Thomas married Mary Bidgood in Tiverton on 21 May 1778 and they had a son John born 17 June 1789.  I am trying to prove that John's parents are Thomas and Mary.  It seems likely, but I cannot prove it.  Is anyone else researching this same Shackell line?   I have a lot of detail about John and his descendants, but am have difficulty going further back.  Any help or hints would be appreciated.

To add to the confusion, a John SHACKELL married a Sophia WILKINS at Taunton St James in May 1816 - he was said to be from Holcombe in Devon. The 1841 and 1851 censuses describe him as a butcher.
Both of the marriages you mention were transcribed as either SHECKEL or SHEEKEL. Christian's burial was also shown as SHECKELL (at Creech St Michael).

Thank you for that reply.  I know about that family of Shackells and other name variants.  He is not the same as my John.  I have done quite of bit of research into the Holcombe Rogus Shackells and hope one day that I may be able to see a connection further back, but at present they appear to be different families.  My research points towards Thomas in Tiverton and that is where I am stuck.  Many thanks.

Hello Tudor briars
I have just read your post about Thomas Shackell. I too am researching the same person having hit the same brick wall. Would you like to share information in case we can at least avoid duplicating effort.
best wishes
