Charles WHS Charlton - Suicide 1871
« on: Saturday 20 October 12 19:42 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have just received the death certificate of my Grt Grt Grandfather Charles William Henry Shields Charlton and was so sad to see that he had committed suicide on the 19th January 1871 and on the cert is states that there was an inquest held on the 21st January 1971, Northumberland.  I was wondering if anyone could advise whether this would have been in reported in the newspaper and if so where would I start to look.

At the time Charles was a Clerk to the River Tyne Commissioner and it is awful to think he would end his life in such a way and leave a wife and five children.

Thanks in advance for any information to point me in the right direction.

This looks rather hopeful - it would be the South Northumberland Coroner - so there might be something at Woodhorn:

I can check the index on my next visit to Woodhorn but I know from experience that not all records were handed over.  There are many missing files.

Still, you could be lucky

Hi Annie

I checked out the index for Coroner’s reports for 1871 but unfortunately only a dozen or so have survived and Charles Charlton is not among them.

Hi Christine

Thank you very much for taking the time to look for the Coroner Report for Charles Charlton but perhaps I have found enough just in the fact that he ended his life in such a way it tells me that he must have been desperate.  I can't thank everyone on Rootschat because I have received lots of help and valuable info from when I first started my tree.

Kind regards.
