Mariah of Gyffin
« on: Saturday 20 October 12 14:54 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm looking for some information on a relative of mine. I have copies of the 1841,51,61,71 & 81 census' this is how I've been able to put together the following information.
Her name over the years appears as Marriah, Mariah & Maria (just to add to the confusion!)
She appears on the 1841 census as Mariah Evans, born 1810, Gyffin, Caernarvonshire. She is living in Castell, Llanfairfechan.
From what I can gather Evans is not her maiden name.

In 1851, at the same address she is listed as being a widow & also a pauper.
By, 1861 she has married William Williams & has two more sons, William Morris & Isaac Morris.
The family are on the 1871 & 1881 census for Capel Garmon, Denbs.
I'd like to find out her maiden name if possible!
Any information would be great!

Hi and welcome

A copy of her marriage cert to William Williams will show her fathers name and surname which will give you her maiden name

The image is viewable on www.findmypast.com but you would have to purchase credits to view it which is actually cheaper than buying a copy

The 1861 entry is a bit of a mish mash of names and relationships.  If William & Isaac are the sons of William and Marriah - why would they be surname Morris?

William Williams 65 married b Aber Caernarvon
Marriah 51 wife b Gyffin
Esther Evans 25 dtr b Llanfairfechan
William Morris 7 son     ditto
Isaac Morris 5 son        ditto
Hugh Davis 20 possibly brother but looks like Burther - unmarried occ stone mason b Llanidan, Anglesey
Jeremiah Williams 25 married also "Burther" occ slater b Llanelwig, Flintshire
Catherine Roberts 25 dtr married b  b Llanfairfechan
Mary Roberts 1 g/dtr  b Llanfairfechan
RG9 Piece 4356 Folio 44 Page 4

1871 has Isaac Williams living with William & Maria and still shown as son

Hi
Thanks for your replies!

The 1861 census is the one that throws me!
William Morris according to the 1881 census is going by the name of William Morris Williams, which suggests that his middle name is Morris, however he drops the Williams by 1891 & his wife Margaret & their children all have the surname Morris.
Esther Evans is the daughter of Marriah from her first marriage, as is Catherine Roberts.
I am at the moment presuming that he & Isaac are the sons of William & Marriah/Maria. He name's one of his son's William & his daughter(my great grandmother) Maria, this make's me believe that he named them after his parents.

I'll be taking up your advise & buying William & Marriah's wedding certificate!

Thanks,
