Mathew Hagarty & Ann Elizabeth Hawkins
« on: Friday 19 October 12 02:07 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any info on Mathew Hagarty & his wife Ann Elizabeth Hawkins.

Mathew was a barrister, Dublin and barrister and an examiner for the Court of Prerogative for Ireland.

They had at least 7 children ( dates of birth are abt)

Henry b. 1806
Mathew b. 1807
Georgia b. 1809
Elizabeth b. 1811
Fidelia b. 1814
John Hawkins b. 17 Sept. 1816 in Dublin
Anthony b. 1818

I think they may have come to New York on the "John & Eliza" in May of 1834 sans Fidelia. with Richard Holland and Edward Gibson and made their way to Ontario

John Hawkins Hagarty became Sir John Hawkins Hagarty.  John Hawkins Hagarty was educated privately and at Trinity College in Dublin, where he stayed for a year (1832–33). He immigrated to Upper Canada in 1834, spending his first year on a farm near Bowmanville.

Any info on Mathew and Anne Elizabeth would be appreciated

There's are a series of baptism matches on the IrishGenealogy website for some of the names you mentioned - but mother's name for these children is Sarah.

e.g.  Baptism of Fidelia Haggarty - 15 Nov 1814
Parish : St. Paul's, Church of Ireland, Dublin City

other baptisms listed include
  Matthew Henry 1807
  Henry 1808
  Georgina 1809
  Elizabeth 1811

see : Hag[g]arty baptisms

I dont see Mathew listed as a barrister in Ireland in Pigot's 1824.

A Matthew Hagarty is listed in 1813 as a Public Notary with an address at Puffin Street, Dublin.

In 1818 he's listed as a Court Examiner and Public Notary with his office at 10 Henrietta St.
In 1834 the Henrietta street address is listed with three proctors with the surnames Tilly,
Hamilton & Ormsby. No sign of Matthew in the Index that I can find....

Hi Shane,

Thanks so much for the info on the bapts and Matthew Hagarty.  That was quick.

I wasn't sure of his wife's name.  I got the name Ann Elizabeth off another forum, so Sarah could be the name.  Is there a record of death of Jane Hagarty between 1795 and 1806?  I wonder if she was his first wife?
Apparently Fidelia didn't come to North America with the family in 1834.  I wonder what happened to her.

Is there any info on a Sarah Hawkins?

I very much appreciate you replying to my query

Thanks again,

not that many death/burials in the registers at that time, just one Jane Hagerty death in the 1800s, and that's in 1818 in Taney parish, which is in County Dublin, and south of the city. The only other mention of a death for that name is in the city in 1755.

Nothing earlier that I've been able to find for Matthew and Sarah, such as a marriage, but the records only cover the city, so it's possible they married elsewhere, or in parish where the records dont go back far enough.

here's a link to the homepage of the website with the parish records :

Hi Shane,

Thanks for your reply.  I also had in my records that Mathew's wife may have been Mrs. Corey or Cobey before he married her.

Hi JohnJensen,

Thanks for your reply.  I have seen this posting and have left a reply on this forum for David.  His email is marked hidden.  So far he hasn't replied.  I have info after they came to Canada, but not much of their lives in Ireland.  I am a gg grand daughter of Elizabeth Hagarty and Henry Solomon Reid.

On the web I have found a John Hawkins, tennant farmer, born Enniscorthy, Wexford, Ireland who married Eiliza Bacon b. Dublin.  They had 4 children.

Anthony Hawkins, b. Ballycorsey

Fidelia Maria Hawkins, b. abt 1782 and married 1800 William Henry Creagh.  William was born abt 1777 to Bartholomew Creagh and Rebecca Buchnan.  William died abt 1826 in NY city New York.  They had 7 children

John Hawkins 1785-1845

Sarah Hawkins 1785- 1821  Sarah married Matthew Hagarty in 1806 and died 1821

These given names seem to be passed on to Mathew and Sarah's children.  The date of Sarah's death doesn't go with the fact that they left Ireland in 1834.
