O'Grady/Grady Family from Mayglass.
« on: Monday 30 August 10 00:27 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks,I am new to this site & was wondering if anyone can help me with trying to trace my O'Grady Ancestry? My Grt.Grandfather was Richard Grady married to Alice & lived in House 1 Glebe Mayglass. I think I have found 2 brothers' of Richard, their names being John & Thomas Grady, although not yet confirmed. I have a very recent photo of a Grave in the Cemetary at Mayglass with the names of Elizabeth O'Grady ..... Orristown.....her Husband Thomas & their Children Catherine,Elizabeth & Joe & their Sister Sarah Devereaux (died 1950) & her Husband William (died 1965). It is a new Headstone and I feel that this Thomas is the younger brother of my Grt Grandfather,Richard ! Does anyone know if there are still any O'Grady families still living in the area,or can anyone put me in touch with whoever may be responsible for the Grave being in such a well looked after condition? My Grt. Grt. Grandfather was Thomas Grady who married Catherine Staunton.....and I believe they were the Parents of Richard,John & Thomas..........and maybe they had more siblings.....any help would be brilliant. I have been told that the Church of The Assumption in Kilmore holds some records but I don't have a point of contact or name of the Priest who may be best informed on History matters. Does anybody also know if the Priest at the New Church of St.Fintan in Mayglass has any Records etc ?   Thanks for taking the time to read this mail, hoping for some help...........Take Care & Be Good.

Just wondering if there are any fairly recent newcomers to the Site, who may have any information at all on the Grady/O'Grady Family that lived in Mayglass. My Grt Grandfather was Richard (Dick) Grady who married Alice. I believe he had 2 brothers John & Thomas, and 1 sister Maria. I have been unable after much time spent trawling through available records here in Liverpool,to find anything at all about Maria, how long she lived, where she lived, did she Marry etc......I have hit the preverbial brick wall after receiving much help from people on here to whom I will be eternally grateful. If anyone can give me any further help with my Family,it would be greatly appreciated.

1911 census link for reference :

  Grady household, Glebe townland

Richard was born before the start of civil records, so you will have to check for parish records for his baptism, and possibly details for Maria also ...

Have you found the family in 1901, or a census return for the sister you mentioned ?

It might help if you include some additional details to help identify this particular [O']Grady family - e.g. the maiden name for Alice.

The civil parish for that Glebe townland is Mayglass, and it's part of the RC parish of Ballymore. Baptism records for this parish go back to 1813, and marriages to 1802, and are available on microfilm Pos. 4246 in the National Library.

Have you birth records for any of the children, or a marriage cert for Richard and Alice ?

Searching forward in time for Maria is more difficult than searching backwards, as none of the usual clues apply - she could have died before the start of civil records, or moved away from the area. Difficult to search for her in civil records among all the other Maria/Mary [O']Grady, unless you have some clues to narrow the search. Have you found your [O']Grady family on the 1901 return ?

Update : The townland of Ballycappoge is in the Civil Parish of  Mulrankin, which is to the west of Ballymore parish. The RC parish for this area is Kilmore. There seems to be quite a few gaps in the records for this parish, but they go back to the 1750s.

Hello again Shane & may I apologise for not replying to you much sooner, but I haven't been able to find out much about this problem but I will tell you the info I actually do have. I know that my Grt Grandfather Ricardus Grady was born 17 May 1855 in Moor,Kilmore. His Parents were Thomas Grady & Catherine Staunton, and I think they came from Ballycapogue? Richard was the eldest of 4 known children....he had 2 Brothers.. John Grady born 24 June 1859 in Gardimus,Mayglass and Thomas Grady born possibly 17 August 1862 ????? I was then informed with help from folks on site that they had a Sister named Maria Grady born 5 April 1857 in Ballycapogue ? I believe she was Baptized 6th April 1857....after this I have no other info as to if Maria lived for long or if she stayed in Ireland etc....I know nothing about her unfortunately ! In 1911 Census I have a Thomas O'Grady & Wife Elizabeth & Family living at 9 Orristown Killinick. In 1901 Census I have I think the same Family living at 3 Talbotstown Killinick....but the ages are a little vague ! Thomas was listed as Thomas Brady in Kilmore Parish Records 17 August 1862. His children if correct were as follows....Nicholas,Katie,Lizzie,Sarah also a Daughter in Law,Mary & grand daughter Josephine. (1911). I have John Grady in 1901 with wife Annie & 3 children,Bridget,Hettie & Mary Anne living at 4 Kilmallock,Wexford. In 1911 I have them living at 1 Kilmallock along with his 2 Brothers in Law,Edward & Michael Whelan.Richard (Ricardus) Grady,my Grt Grandfather married Alice Kelly 1st December 1883 at Mayglass. Alice was the daughter of John Kelly & I think Alice Ronan & was born 7th June 1853. I have written to the Priests at Mayglass on a couple of occasions to see if they can shed any light on my Family Ancestors who lived and worked their lives in & around Mayglass, but I have never received any reply ! I have also had priceless assistance from "comrades" on this site, but I cannot find out anything about Maria or Thomas Grady & Catherine Staunton......or maybe even the Parents etc of Thomas which would be my Grt,Grt,Grt Grandparents ? If you can assist in any way that would be brilliant. The ideal situation would be for me to be able to visit Ireland and spend some time in Dublin at the Records Office etc and travel around Wexford......but as I am unemployed/medically retired this will never happen....unfortunately. Thanks for your time Shane,Take Care & Be Good.    Cheers Phil
