George Cashell from Tipperary - emigrated in 1769
« on: Thursday 18 October 12 05:23 BST (UK) »
Hi, this is my first post on rootschat.  All I know of my ancestor is what happened after he came to Montgomery County, Maryland in 1769.  He was from Tipperary.  Where do I start to find the trail in Ireland?  We are visiting Ireland next summer and really want to know more about the Cashells in Ireland.  Thanks so much for any information you can provide.  I really don't know how to get started.

Welcome to RootsChat, LauraG

The Cashells in the humphrysfamilytree link may or may not be related to your George.  I didn't pick up any indication of any of them going to America ???

Until fairly recently it has been pretty hard to get much information from parish records etc for Tipperary due to - I believe - a cranky bishop who didn't want to share the information.  But things are loosening up.

You'd think that with a surname of Cashel/ll, there would be a link with the Castle.
Even if you don't catch up with any of your rellies when in Ireland, it will be a good thing to visit Tipperary and walk in your ancestors' trails.

Cashell wouldn't be that common a name so any avenue of research is worth looking into.

Too true, Mick - always.  I just meant for the OP to be wary.

Jane Anne Franklin married 1st Capt. Richard Sherlock in 1835 , and then 2ndly she married  a George Cashel Esq in 1839 and they lived for some years in Roselands Cottage, Listowel,  Co Kerry.  I believe this George Cashel was the eldest son of George Cashel Esq of  Bedford House Co Kerry, and also of Shallee  in  Tipperary.  Tipperary being his main  home.
I think Tipperary would be a good place to start  searching.   When I did a little research on this family  a little while back,  I found that there were  George Cashel, Cashell, Cashil , Cashills  galore,  and that Tipperary seemed to be  where  the 'seat' of the family was .  I understood that  in the early days, they  owned mining land or rights there .    Cashin   could also be an earlier derivation of  the name as well.
Good luck with your  George's   Laura !

Thank you, Everyone!!!  You've all been so helpful.  I recently discovered from a distant cousin that his actual name may have been Robert George Cashell.  He was born in 1748 in County Tipperary.  He emigrated to Maryland in 1769, married Mary Wade in 1773, died in Montgomery County, Maryland in 1802.  I will keep searching.  Thanks again!

I have a family land document, that shows a tenanted land to G. Cashel in Shallee.
It was listed as 226 Acres, but downsized to 91 Acres.
Landlord was E.W Newenham.
