James Chambers & Eliza Bell married Lisburn, July 1856
« on: Wednesday 17 October 12 23:42 BST (UK) »
I have been trying without success to locate a marriage record for James & Eliza. I’d welcome any help or information anyone  can offer on either the marriage record or the parents, families etc of James & Eliza.

The marriage details, Lisburn (Ireland) July 1856, are taken from the birth registration of their 4th child, John, born in Scotland in December 1861.  James & Eliza were also resident in Glasgow at the time of the 1861 census. In the census James’s age is 33 and his birthplace is given as Falkirk, Stirlingshire. Eliza’s age is 28 and her birthplace is Ireland. James’ occupation is a weaver. Their first child James was born in Ireland in 1856, and so far a birth record has not been identified. The second & third, Agnes & William were born in Glasgow and birth registrations have been identified.

James & Eliza subsequently emigrated with their family to Canada around 1865-66. James died in Manitoba, Canada in 1919, and Eliza died sometime after the 1891 Canada census. From James’s death registration his birth is given as 12 May 1826.

If anyone can provide information on James and Eliza, or their son James, prior to the 1861 census it would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I cannot see a marriage listed for 1856. What denomination were they? (RC marriages weren’t listed till 1864). It might be worth checking the other Scottish born children’s births to see if the date of marriage is the same (though I think that for the years 1856 – 1859 they didn’t include that on the certs. Could be wrong about that though).

Statutory birth registration didn’t start in Ireland till 1864, so you won't find a stat birth cert for son James. You might find his baptism, but to do that you need to know his exact denomination. The church records generally are not on-line but many have been copied and are in PRONI, Belfast.

Thanks for the quick response!

In the Canada 1871 census their religion is listed as Presbyterian. In later censuses they appear to be baptists.

There is no marriage information listed in any of the other two Scottish birth registrations.

Did James also go to Canada? if so, does marriage and/or death certificates give any clues?

Thanks.

I have requested a copy of his death certificate from Manitoba. James was married in Pembina Co, North Dakota, USA - records don't seem to have survived from that time.

I have received the copy of the death certificate for their son James who died in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1921.

According to the certificate his birthplace was Lisburn, Ireland and his date of birth was 11 April 1857.

Does anyone have asuggestions as to how and where to look for a birth record? Typically what information about the parents would an Irish birth record from that period contain ?

As has been said already, unfortunately a birth of that year is pre Civil Registration in Ireland, so would only be found in church records, if they still exist. Parents names, and townland are usually recorded.

As has also been said, the marriage, if non Roman Catholic, should appear in the Civil Index, but is not obvious at moment.

As a possibility for James snr.... the 1841 Scottish Census has a James Chambers born c1828, living at Dunmore Row with mother Cathne [stet] and siblings.

You won’t get a statutory birth certificate for James because they only started in 1864. If you can locate the church he was baptised in, then typically the baptism would contain the childs name, the parents names (which sometimes includes the mother’s maiden name and sometimes doesn’t), sometimes the townland and the father’s occupation, but not necessarily so. If the family were Presbyterian, then your best prospect is Lisburn 1st Presbyterian church, whose records start in 1692. They are not on-line. A copy is held in PRONI, Belfast. You will need to go and look the records up, or get someone else to do it on your behalf.
