Death Certificate Lookup - Cirencester
« on: Wednesday 17 October 12 07:38 BST (UK) »
Hello!

I'm trying to identify the date of birth and parents of this individual : William Banbury, born between 1875-1881 in England. He is my husband's great-grandfather.

It's been arduous as I have, at least, three different birth years for him :

- Sep 1878 according to the 1911 canadian census
- 1875 according to his return to England in 1913
- 1881 according to the death index in 1931 in Circenster

The only valid information I have managed to harvest is that :
  • William Banbury is in Selkirk, Manitoba on the 1911 census with wife Elizabeth Kent and two sons, Robert and William
  • He came back to England in 1913 with his family
  • His address in 1928 is The Downs, South Cerney, Gloucestershire
  • According to this previous (and rather unique) address, I was able to locate an abstract on the British Newspaper Archive : "Title: COTSWOLD MAN DIES AFTER SMASH
[...]Cirencester William Banbury (50), plumber and Rlazier. of The Downs, South Cerney, who (as already reported) sustained severe concussion and head injuries as the ... [...]
Sat 17 Oct 1931, Cheltenham Chronicle,  Gloucestershire, England"
  • With the above information I located him in the FreeBMD database : DEC 1931 - Banbury William 50 Cirencester 6a 434

I have had no luck identifying where he was from in England. On the 1911 canadian census, it is said that he emigrated around 1902 so, by all means, he should be present on the 1901 census but with no information on the name of his parents, there are too many results for this particular surname. I was hoping to have more information about his parents with his original death certificate?

Any help or information would be greatly appreciated!
Mainly Canadian and American genealogy since I was born in Quebec but also very interested in Scottish genealogy due to my husband and aunt.

Firstly, death certificates in England & Wales do not contain any information about parents or family.

Secondly, they are available to view anywhere! They have to be bought!

What was the name of his wife? Any children?
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Thank you for your quick reply!  :)

I didn't know that, many thanks for clarifying that point. I'm not that familiar with UK genealogy yet and I thought that death certificates contained that information (like marriage certificates).

The name of his wife is Elizabeth Kent, born between 1871-1873 in England, emigrated to Canada around 1904. I found that information on the sames sources mentioned in my original message. I have not yet been able to find a record of their mariage.

Two sons that I know of: Robert John Dennis Banbury, born 1907 in Manitoba, died in 1992 in Huntingdon and Frederick William Banbury, born 1906, probably died in the 80's.

What kind of information would I find when ordering a death certificate?

Hi

The 1911 Canadian census suggests they married in Canada, the marriage certificate may have some useful information.

Hi Andycand! Thank you for your reply!
Yes, however I have conducted thorough searches in Manitoba archives and even a research service, according to the results there is no marriage certificate for this couple in Manitoba. I have tried Quebec and Ontario registers too, with no luck.
I have located their return to England in 1913 but no luck in their outward journey to Canada, that might have given me a clue if they were married before emigrating.

And remember that the information is only as good as that supplied by the informant!
That's why ages at death are suspect!! ;D

Haha! Many thanks!! That is probably why I have so many dates for William Banbury. That link is most interesting, definitely a keeper!  :)

I no longer have a subscription to FindMyPast, but their Passenger Lists (Leaving the UK 1890-1960) has:

Departing 1893, Liverpool for Quebec, Banbury, W

Might be worth buying some credits?

Yes, that is definitely going to be needed. Maybe my husband can offer me the credits for xmas, as I am doing all the hard work!  :D
The thing is I have no definite clue about his leaving England, the only date returned is the one from the 1911 Canada census(1902), it might not be the actual date of him leaving! Oh well, another mystery yet to solve....
