Hi

I believe that Catherine McLaughlin may have been my great grandmother.  My grandfather was James Mclaughlin and was a son of Patrick and Catherine.  If correct I am led to believe he and his siblings were orphaned and brought up on the family farm ?  Does anyone have any information on them at all ?

I have been told that Patrick died in France and has no known grave but no other details are known and I never met James

Thanks in advance

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

My grandfather was James Mclaughlin and was a son of Patrick and Catherine.

Is this your grandfather James, born on 25th July 1913 in Ballycastle?   MMN Simpson

There are three other children born in Ballycastle with MMN Simpson.

Rifleman Patrick McLaughlin (2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles #5736) killed in action 27 Oct.1914. His wife died Apr.195 'following a short illness' and 'her five young children were now orphans.' The family lived Mill St., Ballycastle and Patrick was a labourer so not sure what family farm you mean.

Details on Patrick's war time found (with photo) in Ballycastle Heroes by Robert Thompson (2011).

Hi

Thank you for your kind reply and I believe him and his brother were sent to live with a family on a farm after they were orphaned ?  Never met him so trying to trace back what's been handed down through the family.

Kind regards
Julie

Five children, all very young, were likely doled out to various relatives or even neighbours who could look after them.

Catherine McLaughlin was only 28 when she died- place of death is Le(a)land and informant Ann Campbell of same place.

Baby Eliza Jane born a few days earlier-

Off to check a few things...

1911 census lists 2 children- John Rodgers & William Kerr McLaughlin-
http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Ballycastle/Mill_Street/112796/

So, the 'five young children' were-
John Rodgers (c1908)
William Kerr Laughlin (1910)- mother's name Cassie
Catherine (1912)
James (1913)
Eliza Jane (1915)

Wonder if this is the Ann Campbell informant when Catherine & Eliza Jane born and mother Catherine died-

Or this Ann Campbell?

Both have McLaughlin relatives in household but that may be merely a co-incidence and nothing to do with your McLaughlins.
