National Assitance records
« on: Monday 15 October 12 18:25 BST (UK) »
Hi. Can anyone tell me how long any National Assistance records are 'locked'? My grandmother went on it in 1923/4 after her husband deserted her and their 3 children. She died in 1953.
Any help most appreciated
Sue

Hi

What sort of record is it, the time scale all depends on what type of document you are looking for

Hi
Thanks for replying.

Basically, my grandfather left his family when my Dad was 6 months old (approx). This would be mid 1924. I know she was on NA for some years as my Dad remembers them coming round to assess her goods and needs. What I hope is to find any record of interviews that took place as the family has various stories as to what happened to my grandad. He has never been heard of since the day he walked out. My grandmother would never talk about him and I would dearly love to answer some of the many questions. Obviously she would have had to tell some of it to the board.
Thanks again
Sue

Hi

If you can give me the names of your grandparents and the area they lived, I will have a look

Hi again.

Their names were Susan Jane Hardy and Thomas George Hardy. The childrens' names were Frederick (1919), Kathleen (1921), Albert (1923)

The last record of Susan and Tom was in Humberston nr Grimsby, Lincolnshire and then Susan was in Grimsby when she registered my Dad's birth. (a very late registering)

Sorry it's a bit sketchy but I need to look out some old info if you need more. Just let me know if you do.

Many thanks

Sue

Hi

The type of records you are looking for are not available to the public.  When a person receiving state benefit dies - their records are destroyed after a certain period - it used to be 6yrs but back in 1953 it may have been sooner

Thanks for your reply.

Ah well, looks like I'll never get the answers. Always assuming they would have answered them anyway.

Thanks again
