Kellys, Connells, McDonnells In Canbrack/Kiltimagh/Mayo
« on: Sunday 14 October 12 17:41 BST (UK) »
My g grandfather was a James Kelly-born around 1868-he married Bridget Connell and they had (I think) 11 children 9 of whom survived.
Most seemed to go to the USA between 1910-1928-my grandfather seems to be the only one that came to Liverpool.
I have not found a James Kelly (junior) that was born around 1892-Mary, Thomas, Patrick, Anne, Martin, John and Bridget (or Bridie) seem to all have gone to Chicago or Hoboken in New Jersey.
Any info on any of these-especially James jr would be great.
Bridget connells sister Jane also went to the USA.
Also McDonnells are connected to the Kelly family-cousins-ome of whom came to the UK/Liverpool.

Welcome to rootschat pollyward  :)

I wonder if this is James' birth registration?

You can apply for a birth certificate at http://www.groireland.ie/  and as you have the parents names, you could ask for a search.

regards
heywood

PS I am assuming that you have looked at Irish census and Ellis Island site?

Hi there, thanks for your reply, I'm not sure if that's "my" James-where is Castlebar-is it near Canbrack or Kiltimagh?
Its so difficult when the names are so common!
Can you search for free or is there a fee or do you have to order the certificate?
I have ordered an irish certificate before, years ago, so it was all done by phone-but luckily I had the exact birth date and parents names.

I did check ellis island but I couldn't find the one relative I knew had emigrated at that time (John) I found out later that the other siblings also emigrated-via Ancestry.com and a lady from Ancestry.com who searched chicago census and old newspapers for me-but I will have another look on the ellis island site.

Hi again,

re Ellis Island - I had looked and found Mary Kelly (presumed she was the one to go first perhaps as she was missing from 1911 census).
It is difficult for you because of there being so many Kellys but found one with Kiltimagh and then the manifest shows it to be her.

Here are the brief details:
Apr 14, 1910     Caronia  departing from Liverpool
She is number 0016 on the manifest.

If you have not used Ellis Island - click on 'ship manifest' and then click to maginfy image with the magnify icon.  Often you find that the records are difficult to determine because the lines were quite narrow but it shows that she went to Chicago (to an aunt I think)  and gives her father's name.
Another thing to remember is that, the later manifests especially, go over 2 pages so you get one then need to click on the 'next' or 'previous' button. The manifest number helps you to find your person.

I think that Castlebar is the registration district which would cover Kiltimagh.
You can download a form from that site and send it to the Roscommon address. When I did it a few years ago, I filled in my credit card number on the form because it was easier with Euros and there was no problem. I got a strip of paper which was a photocopy of the register.

Thanks again, the familysearch website is great-so many sites charge for anything but the most basic info!
I will check out Ellis island again-
