Allen williams Grantham.

Hello all i am looking for any information on Allen Williams,he emigrated to America in 1921 and returned to Grantham in 1932.He came to 56 High street Grantham was that a privat dwelling or buisness premises.

It's a new building now but in the 1933 directory it was the premises of Appleby and Hastings (Tailors).  Presumably there could have been living accommodation above.

There is this marriage on FreeBMD of an Allen Williams marrying an Olive C Gillett in the Dec Qtr of 1914 in the Grantham Reg. District......

There is also the death of an Olive C Williams in March Qtr of 1925 in the Bristol Reg District but she was aged only 25 at death and if that is her marriage above then she would have been a bride at 14......mmmm!

Olive was in America until 1932 so not her, she returned home with the two children

There is an arrival record for Allen and Olive in New York on 14th April 1920 but the entry has been crossed out.
It gives Allen's mother-in-law as Mrs. Gillett, 128 Harrowby Road, Grantham. It says that they are heading for Lowell, Mass.
Children are Dorothy and Gordon.

There is a second entry on 16th May, giving Allen's father-in-law as Mr. J Gillett, 128 Harrowby Road. Allen is a motor engineer. Olive is shown as Clare but the previous record is Clara - Olive Clara Gillett, born in Peterborough.

Allen arrived back in Liverpool in April 1932. He is a chauffeur of 56 High Street, Grantham.
Olive and the children arrived back in July but their destination is Cadby (Cadeby?), Leicestershire.

In 1930, Allen is a garage mechanic, living in First Street, Tewksbury, Massachusetts, with Olive and the children.

As Geoff suggests, it sounds as though they were renting above a shop, given Allen's occupation.
