Edward Trevelyan - Edmonton 1916
« on: Friday 12 October 12 20:52 BST (UK) »
I have been tracking family members during world war one.
Intrigued to find Edward Trevelyan joining Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in Edmonton in March 1916.
(per enlistment paper on Ancestry)

Edward was born in Sampford Arundel, Somerset England in 1884,
In 1911 he was working as a carpenter and living in Wellington, Somerset.

The enlistment paper is definitely his, as it gives his mothers address in Wellington - although he gives his date of birth as 1886 which is surprising as it was registered in 1884 (could be Ancestry or BMD transcription error).
It gives address of 326 4th Streeet edmonton and says he was working as a book keeper.

I have not found his passage to Canada and not sure how long he stayed there or whether he settled there permanently.

How can I check out what happened to him?

Ancestry and Library & Archives Canada only puts the front and back of the Attestation paper online. THe entire file can be sent for though. Just go to http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-130-e.html?PHPSESSID=p1c9opvaqndi8pk3mj7og15if0#h  for instructions on ordering the complete file.

Sometimes there is death information in the file, you never know what will be found in it.

Hi lizb,

As eillo mentions, the service files are available from the Government of Canada. The files I have contain lots of info and were reasonably priced - I dont recall any of them being over 20 dollars, most under 10.

I am assumming this fellow lived through the war and returned to Canada. If so, you may find his return passage in the passsenger lists at the end of the war. I have found some of my fighting ancestors that way.

If your ancestor returned to England his info would be there. If he died during the war, you may find his resting place on the Commonweath Gravesite webite. I dont recall the link at the moment but it is on the site provided by eillo.

Hope this helps,

Have you ruled the death of Edward Trevelyan age 55 who died 1940 in Newton A (5b) (FreeBMD)?  This reg is in Devon but seems close to Wellington Som (5c) which is on the boundary bx Devon and Som? This man appears to be the correct age.

We search for information but it is up to the thread owner to verify that it is correct.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will proabably follow up full service records.

And yes I think the Newton Abbott death is him. I found a marriage for him in LOndon later in 1916 (newspaper notice with family details so know it is him) so he must have come back here soon after enlisting. I have also found the birth of a daughter to this marriage in 1920 in Newton Abbott.

The wedding notice says he was with the CEF 137th battalion

My puzzle is - what was he doing in Canada that he enlisted there?

But I have a few more leads to follow up on now.

Hi Edward Trevelyan was my Grandfather he moved to Canada in about 1903 and settled with a cousin (unkown) helping him on his farm, he came back to the UK in 1911 to see his Mum after the death of his father, returning some monthe later, after meeting his later wife in Welliongton Som, she came from Newton Abbot.  As you know he enlisted in 1916 and on being shipped to the UK with the CEF married Edith Maud Bearne in Richmond. After WW1 they emigrated to the US but only stayed 3 years returning in 1924 with 2 children, one being my Dad.  They settled in Newton Abbot where he died in 1940.  I am always looking for more details of his time in Canada so if anyone can help, here's one grateful Grandson.

Great to receive your post. Nice to make connections and tie up loose ends. My connection is through his mother Martha Bishop  who was born in Wellington.

Can you confirm details I have  of Edwards siblings:

Great to get your reply, I have 2 photos of Martha, one taken when my grandparents were going to the USA in 1921.  Your details are correct as far as I know. EXJ

I would love a picture of Martha if it was possible for you to scan it and send to me. I will send you a "personal message" with my email address hoping this is possible.

I have looked at the Bishop side of the family to see if the cousin you mention was there but I do not think so. A cousin of Marthas (surname Leveratt) went to Toronto circa 1850 but the family were not farmers and anyway the connection was too early. The son of another cousin went about 1905 but he became a Methodist minister. So the connection was probably the Trevelyan side expecially as some of them were farmers.

I will keep my eyes open and let you know if I find anything. He was there for some time so there should be something. Possibly a hint in newspapers or electoral rolls.

I knew my great grandfather went to Argentina with his father circa 1890 and I spent years looking for clues and then suddenly I found them on a passenger list and newspaper article explaining whe they returned - they arrived in the middle of a revolution!
