Is this a street in Carlisle?
My area of interest is the Routledge shop, my GGG Grandfather Andrew Routledge had a tailors shop where WH Smiths is situated now. I can also make out the Edgars shop.

I notice that the vehicle on the left appears to have an HH registration, which would point to Carlisle.  It can't be the English Street Shop around where WH Smith is now as the sun would have to be due east (ie six o'clock in the morning) to throw a shadow like the one in the photo.
I can only make out the Edgar Shop sign, can you decipher any others?  If I have two or three names, I can track it down through directories.

I was wondering if the central shop which appears to start with an S be Slack's???
Also the shop between Edgars and the above starts with a J (I think) and I found a shop called Jespers, which is an outfitters.

I was talking to a lovely lady who is 94 years old, she thought there was a Routledge's shop opposite where Andrew Routledge tailors shop was, she thought it sold Ladies clothes.
Has anyone any thoughts on this?

I asked my dad (94yrs old) tonight if he remembered where Jespers was and he said it was on the opposite side to where WH Smiths is now, he thinks where Clinton Cards is.  He said that the Silver Grill cafe was where Boots is now.  He remembers Edgars being the ironmongers on Lowther Street, which closed in the early 60s.

According to the 1910 Kelly's directory, Andrew Routledge was on the same side as M&S and Jespers and WH Smiths seems to be in the same place as it is now but the number of English Street seems different but next to it was Routledges Watchmaker.

The picture looks to me more like Devonshire Street, Lowther Street or maybe Botchergate?
