Mosse family of Derbyshire
« on: Friday 12 October 12 00:27 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone!

I am looking for info on the mosse family of Derbyshire. The furthest back I can get is to a Thomas Mosse in 1682. He is the father of a Samuel Mosse. The thing that intrigues me is that Mosse can potentially be a Jewish name and on the derbyshire council website it makes mention of a 'Thomas Mosse father of Moses Mosse of shenton'. I know it is a far way back but is there anyway I can find anything substantial out about this family?

Thank you all.

Hi Gregory

Do you, by any chance, have a Susanna(h) Moss(e) in your info?  My husband's 3 x g.grandmother was born about 1776 and married in 1795.  The 1841 census shows she was not born in Cheshire where she was living at the time of the census, but she was living on the borders of Derbyshire.

Unfortunately, she died before the 1851 census, so we have no further information about her, apart from the fact that she died in Glossop where she was working as a housekeeper following her husband's earlier death.

Lizzie

ps.  We don't know where her husband came from either, although they did marry in Stockport, Cheshire.

My feeling is that my husband's 3 x g.grandmother came from Derbyshire  and also possibly her husband - but we have no evidence to back this up - as on the 1841 census there were quite a few people we believe to be his cousins living in the same street as his widow and following them on to later census, they gave their birth places as Glossop.

Hi,

I'm sorry I dont have a susannah I I can get back to a Thomas mosse born 1650 who married a Sarah.

It appears then that there were a number of mosse's in Derbyshire. I wonder where the links lie? Like I said there is on the Derbyshire council website a business transaction or claim between a Joseph mosse and a Moses mosse both the sons of a Thomas mosse. This takes place in 1627. I wonder if all our families are linked then? As I mentioned mosse can be a Jewish name and both Moses and Joseph are. Having said this I cannot find any mention of this or any real indication and Derbyshire doesn't strike me as a place with a Jewish population.

Lizzie do you have a William goodfellow in your tree? Thank you everyone

Hi Gregory,

You say on the "Derbyshire County Council" web site do you mean County Record Office, Derbyshire site or their
listings on A2A?

Have searched both and have been unable to discover the document you mention, can you give a connection
or the reference number please.

Only ask because it is important to understand what the document is and why it is in a particular collection,
if you can give me a connection will take a look to see if I can discover anything else.

Hi Spendlove,

It's the Derbyshire Record Office sorry for not being more exact!

It's here: http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/applications/dserve/dserve.exe?dsqServer=V-AP02&dsqIni=Dserve.ini&dsqApp=Archive&dsqDb=Catalog&dsqCmd=Overview.tcl&dsqSearch=((text)='GLOVER')

And the passage itself is:

Release and quitclaim by Moses Mosse of Shenton (Co. Leicester) glover to Joseph Mosse of Lullington (his eldest brother) of all right etc. in a toft or croft in Lullington with a barn thereon and in one acre one rood of arable in Netherseal purchased by Thomas Mosse (father of Moses) from Daniel Prowdman (4 Jun 1609), and in half an acre and one rood also in Netherseal on Waterfall Heath Leas in Farr Field purchased by Thomas from Henry Baker of Appleby Parva yeoman (4 Jun 1609)

Since Shenton is near Market Harborough  in Leicestershire and not Derbyshire..and since Lullington is right on the southern boundary of Derbys/Leics..........you might be better off looking on Leicestershire where there are several "early" Mosse's
