I found the information about John Broadley (and others)being taken to court on the Gale newspapers,(which you can read online) and the newer British newspapers online. The British newspapers online site generally gives you enough information on the free search so that you can tell if you want to pay to see the whole thing, unless your family is called Smith perhaps, claytonbradley
Broadley (Lancs all dates and Halifax bef 1654)

... his mother is Nancy on legal documents but Anne in all census ...

The names Ann(e)/Nancy are often interchangeable.

Yes, I never take any certificate as 'the truth', I have one marriage cert where the wife puts her mother's maiden name as hers and her father who is deceased is also called the maiden name of the wife.

If you know what I  mean!

I have an instance where a brother has been put down as father of the bride on the marriage certificate. I know that it is the brides brother as it also has his occupation correct. The father was still alive and the bride lived at home with the rest of the family in the census records plus there was only 3 years difference in their ages.

This is one problem I do not suppose will ever be solved. I wonder if perhaps the father was ill so the brother gave the bride away in his place. Then when signing the register after the marriage the brother was asked his name and occupation by the vicar who may have thought that as the brother had given the bride away he was her father  :-\

Snap!  I have one that did that too.  Took a long time to work out who she really was, after a lot of fruitless searching for non-existent people!  ::)
