William Aberdeen death in the weir (wear) 1900
« on: Thursday 11 October 12 16:59 BST (UK) »
Hi, wounder if any one can help me or shed a bit more light on the subject.
As I've been left wanting to know more. This is what I have:
William Aberdeen of 33 crossgate' durham. Mason. born 1849. He was found dead on the 6 October 1900 but he had been missing for 9 months so time of death was estimated 16 Feb 1900. He was found drowned in the river weir. The effects of £397 14s 1d was left to his son John Pearson Aberdeen who was a corporal in the Coldstream guards.

I guess I'm hoping someone will have that little bit of information that will answer the few questions I have. It's a long shot but thought I would give it ago.

Many thanks

Were you wanting to find out more about his life - parents, siblings, wife etc
Or more about his death? If the latter I guess looking for newspaper articles would be the place to start.
Plus getting the death cert?

I'm interested in his life or the lead up to his death. As to me it seems strange that he was missing for so long before he was found.
Would I have to go to Durham library to find newspapers articles as I don't get back home as often. Or would they be available in my local library where I now live ? How much information would a death certificate give me ? Would have there been a coroners report ? And would I be allowed to get access to it.

There would have been an inquest, but your best bet is a newspaper report as not all coroners records survive. Newspapers at that time usually give lots of information. There is nothing in the online newspapers at the time, either the British Newspaper Archive or the 19th Century British Library Newspapers

Remember 1881 is free to search - I think he is there with wife and children.
Also hopefully the unusual name will help you to find his BM and D on freebmd.
Shout if you get stuck, or need other censuses

Yes I've all ready looked on the British news paper website but they didn't have the Durham advertiser on which was the local paper at the time.

I've managed to get up to 1815 with the Aberdeen family tree pass that it just says Scotland on the census. Not helpfully with a name like Aberdeen. I believe his wife was all ready deceased as by the time of the 1901 census the young children are living with there brother and his wife. The other sons who where of age went in to the army.

Think next time I get home to Durham a trip to the library is called for its so intriguing to find out how he ended up in the river.

Both from family search.org:

He was buried 9 October 1900, Durham City.

This looks like his baptism?
