1911 Census - Help
« on: Thursday 11 October 12 12:46 BST (UK) »
Hello All

I am not sure if anyone can help here without breaking the rules. I have read the guide to posting around the 1911 census and tried to do a search to see if it has been covered before but there are so many pages with the keywords in them.

I have a full subscription with FindMyPast so have full access to the 1911 census. My problem is not that I cannot search it, just that I cannot find what I am looking for on it.

If this was for another census I could simply post the information I have and would get the usual great help from Root Chat members but I do not want to break any rules or ask anyone else to.

Any advice or guidance from any moderator would help.

Many Thanks

Mayan

Perhaps you are being too specific or too general with your search terms, the entry could be mis-transcribed. If you give a little info RootsChatters may be able to suggest alternatives to look for!
Rigg/Scholfield - Oldham/Rochdale
Hibbert/Moore - Hayfield/Saddleworth
Garstang/Kirby - Littleborough/Todmorden

Mayan -

I'm also a FindMyPast subscriber & while Ancestry's had the free access *(until early November IIRC) I've been looking for my missing. Some still are missing, but most of those I've found were ones where FindMyPast have used the same surname for everyone on the page - even the servants.

This sort of thing using made up names -  "John Smith" a farm servant on the farm of the Johnson family would eventually be found to have been transcribed as John Johnson (though the schedule was clear as Smith). If "John Smith" had a relatively rare combination of first name, age and place of birth you could try searching on those three elements - I'd already found some that way.

Other things I've found on FindMyPast's 1911 is that they don't seem to have pigeon-holed place & county names in the same way as the earlier censuses, but have more exactly used what was written. Examples:
"Macclesfield, County of Chester" on census schedule - searches will find from Macclesfield or Chester, but not Cheshire
"Macclesfield" - searches will find from Macclesfield, but not Cheshire

* In case you've not tried - if you have an Ancestry sign in (eg from a former membership or free trial) you can use that, otherwise you will need to create one.

Good hunting!

Thank you all for your replies.

I have tried using the free Ancestry but so far no luck but will keep trying.

mshrmh I take your point and is one I will continue to pursue.

David- Below is a summary of what I am trying to find and the info I know and have tried so far.

I am looking for the family of Robert Stell born 15th May 1867.

In 1891 he is living with his new wife Rose (nee Kirby) born 1869 and his brother in law George in Watson’s Walk, St Albans. They married in the 1st Quarter of 1891 in St Albans.

By 1901 the family has moved to Milton Road, Hendon in Middlesex. They have two daughters Rose born 1892 and May born 1900.

I believe that I have him back in St Albans in 1911 living with a Jessie Frosdyke born 1887 and a daughter of the same name. Jessie is shown as single and a housekeeper. I do not know if the daughter is his or if there is anything going on but Jessie Snr is shown as being born in St Johns Wood which is not far from Hendon.

My problem is I can find no record on the 1911 census for either Rose Snr or Jnr or for May.

I have looked under Stell, Steel and Still and various other variations along with her maiden name Kirby.

The daughter Rose would have been old enough to have married and moved away but May would only be 11 and should be with one of the parents.

I cannot locate a death entry for any of them. I have also searched passenger lists and can not find them leaving the country.

Many Thanks

Hi Mayan

As far as I can see there is no death for a Rose Stell between 1901 and 1960, apart from one in Yorkshire who is 20 years too young.

As Robert seems to have left her, or she has left him, by what you have found in 1911, my theory is that she may also be living with another man then and has taken his name.
