I prefer the 1885 version, at least it there was a light during daylight hours. ;D  And I bet the trains were more punctual than the cross city route currently is ... so says someone who has to use it every day at the moment. >:(

I still remember the old Bull Ring and that underpass you had to go down near where Waterstones is.  I hadn't been into Moor Street station since they had redeveloped the old part as the new entrance area until this year.  Looks quite posh now. ;)  I remember using it during the 1980s when you still arrived at the old station, and then later when the new one opened and the old part was not used prior to redevelopment.  It was always a trip to the sales arriving at Moor Street just after Xmas.  Always thought it was sad they hadn't done anything with it for so many years so nice to see now.

Looking into pre-war locations for Birmingham ancestors I came across a series of 8mm cine films of Birmingham in 1958.....see the link for the first of these. Not great quality but that somehow adds to the nostalgia!

I remember when the new Bullring was being built. There was a workmans food caravan which served up the best bacon butties especially on a freezing cold morning. Mum and I went to the Bullring markets but cannot remember details. Queen Street which ran through the middle of New Street station was cobble stones and very slick in wet/icy weather.
I have very fond memories of New St, Snow Hill (with the buffers) Moor Street and Curzon St.
When the new Bullring was built there was a fish and chip shop which had lovely meat pie and chips. Guess I love food ;-)
