Researching the Wrights.
« on: Thursday 11 October 12 03:10 BST (UK) »
Hi there...Just started with this website and I think that I may get some information that I need to research the Wrights Ropes Ltd Dynasty.
It appears that my grandmother was a Relative of John and Erwin Wright...Way, way back....
Only got vague information up to now but I am doing a lot of Research.
If anyone can tell me the name of the Founder when it was Founded in 1770 I would be extremely grateful..
Got a lot of Info about John and Erwin Wright and about the Buy out of Rollaston but as to the bits inbetween 1770 and 1935 the Information is sparse...

It`s a sad fact that my Grandmother lived in St. Andrews Road and she could see the Wrights chimney at the end of the road and knew that she was an Ancestor of the Founders and had been disinherited because of a Family fued.

I would like to see where the rift in this Family Tree occurred so any Information about the Wrights would be greatly received.

Hope I did not bore you with too much reading matter and I hope that my 1st entry into the Forum will be well received.

Any Information I have to date I will gladly share to anyone who wants it and I will keep the Forum up to date with any further Items.

1899-1963 WRIGHTS ROPES LTD.

Formerly known as JOHN & EDWIN WRIGHT LTD.

To date the research I have done has opened up a new area for me ...I wasn`t really interested in the Industrial Revolution..But now..WOW.. What a revelation...We in Birmingham had the Greatest Manufacturing Companies around.

Sorry to bore you all..Will shut down now and shut up OK?

Brian.

There is quite a bit of info out there just by putting

JOHN & EDWIN WRIGHT LTD Rope manufacturers 1770's in to google.

However it seems to be mid 1800's and not back to 1770's.

"Many of the companies whose archives are listed here are represented by a small quantity of records, but there are notable accumulations in the cases of Glaholm and Robson, R. Hood Haggie and Sons, Webster and Co and Wrights' Ropes."

Pigot's 1828 doesn't list them,the next reference being White's 1849 which has them at 20 Dartmouth St.
1851 has John & Edwin 2 doors from each other aged 25 & 22 resp. so C.1849 is probably the date they started.

Hi Jim1

Many thanks for the Info...
Now have a bit more to go on..Dartmouth St. sounds familiar to me from what my Grandma told me.

Still wish for the name of the Founder in 1770....
You will see on all the Wrights Advertising Leaflets that they state "Founded in 1770" !!!!!

I don`t doubt that the Ltd Company was mid 1850`s as I have read the Article on the Atlantic Cable of 1865.

Need a little more to go on.

Anyway, Thanks again.

Brian

If you are doing Family History it helps enormously to get the terminology right.  Your Grandmother was a Descendant of the Founders.  They were her Ancestors   :) :)

Errors excused!  And I was only trying to help, not criticise!

You will get better, probably very quickly.  Especially if you read posts from the more experienced people on RootsChat  :) :)

Another tip - if you edit your profile to show where you live (at least country, but preferably more) it will stop us giving silly advice.

Not much use telling someone to nip along to the National Archives at Kew if they live in Australia   :o ::)
