Sorry I have not been responsive for the last few days...I've been busy.
Thank you for the information you have provided. Ann...that last link has proved to be quite helpful. I think I have a clearer understanding of the tenements now.
I have also been doing a bit of research on the numbers of people living at the three addresses I have in Richard Street, Glasgow.
In 1881, 121 people are listed on the census as living in number 41. The figure is the same in 1891 but the families are different.
Number 45 has 181 people in 1881 and 144 in 1891.
Number 44 is interesting because there appears to be less. 69 people are living there on the night of the 1881 census and this rises to 80 in 1891.
Going back to what you said Ann, about odds being on one side of the street and evens being on the other side...I'm thinking that maybe the houses in this particular are of the street were smaller on the even side than the odds. Still some form of tenements, but maybe three storeys as opposed to four or five.
Looks like I may have to pay The Mitchell another visit and check that out...see if I can collate info on housing reports, rents, poor applications etc. Sounds like a lot of work but worth it to be right.
