Selmes Families
« on: Tuesday 09 October 12 09:36 BST (UK) »
I am researching the surname Selmes - for my own family line, which comes from Sussex, England - but also as a one-name study of Selmes, anytime, anywhere, and earlier this year I registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies.

I'd be pleased to hear from anyone researching their Selmes family. I have a growing database of Selmes info so we may be able to help each other.

My own line goes back from my 4 x great grandmother Hester (sometimes Esther) Selmes born Whatlington, Sussex in 1780, daughter of Stehen Selmes and Hester Hubbard. Stephen Selmes was born in 1752, the youngest son of Samuel Selmes and Elizabeth Baker who lived at Sedlescombe, Sussex.

Best wishes

Hi Human51
I've just joined this forum and have found you are searching for info on the Selmes family.  I am descended from Simon Selmes c1745-1823 from Sedlescombe who was married to Sarah Aylward. I'm in Australia and my closest Selmes relative is Ada Heffernan nee Selmes [my great grandmother]. Let me know if I can help with any info for you.

I've just looked at my tree again and have found that Stephen Selmes is my 5 x great grand uncle. Hester was my 1st cousin 6x removed. Hopefully we can help each other.

Hi Caroline - I'm sure I have been in touch with you many years ago via snail mail  :)

I'm going back through my SELMES research now that I have discovered many East Sussex parish register images are now available online on Family Search.

Just a quick re-cap...I am descended from Jane SELMES d. of Simon SELMES & Ann nee MATSON bap. 1811 Rye, Sussex.

Simon SELMES son of Simon SELMES & Sal (AKA Sarah Ann) nee AYLWARD bap. 1781 Ewhurst, Sussex

Simon SELM(E)S son of Simon SELM(E)S & Elizabeth nee BAKER bap. March 1744/5 Sedlescombe, Sussex

SIMON SELM(E)S son of Samuel SELM(E)S & Mercy nee BAKER bap. 1717 Whatlington, Sussex

Samuel SELM(E)S probable son of David SELM(E)S & Ann nee JARVIS bap. about 1691 possible Ore [need confirmation but Ore parish registers not on Family Search]

David SELM(E)S son of David SELM(E)S & Susanna nee BAKER bap. 1658 Brightling, Sussex

David SELM(E)S and Susanna BAKER married at Salehurst, Sussex in 1652.

I have pieced together various other branches (including the Nothiam & Westfield branches) from Lewes archdeaconry Court wills and discovered that some marriages were recorded with the name SELVENS  ??? Fortunately most of the wills were very informative naming many grandchildren and married daughter's husbands names (I am guessing you have probably already worked through these wills).

Michelle

Hello Michelle
Yes, I do remember you! It's good to know that you're still researching. I've been trying to find our correspondence in my paper Selmes file but no luck yet.
I love Wills and have all of the pre-1858 ones for Selmes from ESRO and TNA. They've been a tremendous help in sorting out families.

I've noticed that Selvens/Selnesvens variation and but have no idea how it came about. It occurred mostly in Brede.
Remind me, from which of Jane Selmes' children do you descend?
It's good to be in touch again, and if I can help at all with your Selmes research just let me know.
Best wishes
