Berry Family Fife - Completed
« on: Tuesday 09 October 12 04:31 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate any help/suggestions with research regarding David Berry, Christened 2 Jun 1805, Leuchars, Scotland,
married Jean/Jane Thompson.

They had 3 children Agnes born 1836, Markinch, Fifeshire, George born 27th March, 1838, Markinch, and
David born 1840 Markinch, Fifeshire.   In 1841 Census David's occupation is shown as Ag Lab and they were living at Thornton.
Agnes and George Jnr both immigrated to Australia and lived at White Hills, Victoria.

Thanks, EffieAnn

Hi,

    Welcome to rootschat.

First of all do you have a tree on Ancestry?  According to the Births & Baptisms for 1800-1954 along with David there is a Anne 15-5-1803, Catherine 1807, Andrew 23-7-1809 and a James 21-7-1911 all born to a David Berry and Elizabeth Watson in Leuchars, Fife.

I also found on A* in the NSW Australia, Immigration Deposit Journals 1853-1900 a David Berry b1840
Fife, Scotland (Miner)  Sponsor James Herd.

Hi,

Thanks very much for your welcome, and for the information that you have posted in reply to my query.

Yes, my Cousin had put the Berry/Hudson family tree on Ancestry a few years ago, and neither of us have been able to find out anything more.

The information you have given me is very helpful, thank you, and I will follow both through further.

Regards,

Effie Ann

Hello Effie Ann

I am descended from Ann Berry daughter of James Berry and Catherine Wilson. So we are most likely related. I noticed that you are in Australia. On another line I am related to Peter Smith Dawson of Adelaide who was a noted bass baritone singer in the early 20th century. Also a great great granducle Hugh Fraser died aboard the L.N.S. "Ellamany" in Melbourne in 1888 and i am desperate for more details. If you can help i would be happy to reciprocate with my iformation.

Apparently the Berry's were originally Huegenots from Cherbourg, France.

Kindest Regards

Simon C Miller, Nottingham, England, UK.

Hello Simon,

Thanks, it is nice to find another "Berry", and it was interesting to read that the Berry's were originally Huegenots from Cherbourg, France.

Re your Peter Smith Dawson, I am enclosing a page from the Australian Dictionary of Biography
on him for you.  It is very interesting to read and there is also a photo there as well.

I have looked at a lot of shipping lists and arrivals but have not been able to find any information on the L.N.S. "Ellamany" at all.   In the immigration records into Victoira there is one marine death for Hugh Fraser in 1855 on the ship Covenanter.  Also on the online Unassissted Passengers to Victoria indexes at www.prov.vic.gov.au there are 32 people arriving named Hugh Fraser.

Is it possible that the information that you have is incorrect?   Also on the same website there are 10 Hugh Fraser's mentioned in the Wills section - all of this information is free to download.

Reagrds, Effie Ann
