Woodstown
« on: Friday 05 October 12 19:13 BST (UK) »
On family search I found a birth record for a possible ancestor in Woodstown.  On the birthplace line it shows four numbers preceeding Woodstown.  On other births for the same family it's showing different numbers. Does anybody know what these numbers mean ?

Thanks Mairead

Those sound like extracted records, in which case the number refers to the register page.

If you search for the same name and details on the BMD Index, you should see a matching entry with the full index details. You can use these to order a research cert from the GRO, which will show a few more details.

in many cases the place of birth shown in these extracted records is a district or sub-district, rather than an exact location.

Woodstown is the name of a sub-district of Waterford registration district, as well as the townlands (upper & lower) of that name. The district and the  townlands, are located to the south east of Waterford city on the coast of the Estuary of the Three Sisters (Nore/Suir/Barrow).
