WIGHT
« on: Thursday 04 October 12 22:45 BST (UK) »
I am researching the WIGHT family and have hit the wall around 1800. James Wight was born in Insch, Aberdeenshire, Scotland on 14 May 1804. His parents were George Wight from Whitehall and Margaret Mearns. However, when I try to get birth or marriage information on George and Margaret, I am not having any success. Can anyone point me in the right direction.

Hi Sojar,

Have you tried Scotlands People? Thats the best place to start. You have to buy credits to view certificates. All the best.

Anne50, Yes I have, which is how I arrived at this point. However, I found it very costly eliminating all the possibles, so took out a subscription with a well known ancestry engine, hoping to achieve my aim. May have to revert back to your suggestion. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. Sojar

Hello, I have traced my family back to Peter Wight who was born 6th August 1777.  He married Barbara Duncan.  They farmed in Culsalmond - the farm is called Rivefold.  They had 5 children I have found so far - John 1805, Agnes 1806, Barbara 1808, Christian 1810 and Peter 1813.   Perhaps they were related - as its the same area.

Not much help, I know, but I found an 1896 obituary in Aberdeen Weekly News for James Wight, son of the late farmer of old Wester Echt James Wight. It contained some information about James snr. Who was apparently very involved in the Baptist Church. I think this is the extended family that you are searching for and wondered if this might be another area to search. I, myself, could find nothing in Scotlandspeople.
