Which Program?
« on: Thursday 04 October 12 21:29 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I took a break from researching my family history about 5 years ago, think I burnt myself out.  Anyway, I want to get back into it and am looking at software programs to use.  I have an old copy of Roots Magic (from 2005) but would like something more up to date, as I am sure there are loads of new features.

I would ideally like something fairly easy to use and that produces nice charts and publications, and if possible an all-in-one chart.

I know you must get asked hundreds of times, and appreciate it is down to personal preference, but just looking for recommendations on which programs are best at the moment.

Thanks in advance.

Download the free version of Legacy. It is easy to use, and if you like it the paid for version at $29.99 (around £18 sterling) isn't ruinous to buy.

I agree with RR.    ;D

Legacy is very good especially when you consider it is free.

Ease yourself "back in".
Get your tree loaded.

How are you going to (re)load your tree data?

I have a gedcom file backup which I am hoping to import.  Failing that, i could fire up the old RootsMagic software and look at other export options to the new software.  Fingers crossed anyway.

+1 for Legacy, and you should be able to import your old GED file without any trouble.

I used the free version for several years before paying for the full function version. The free version gives you almost everything but the full version has loads and loads of reports built in. Well worth the cost IMHO.

Thank you all for the responses.  Can't really ignore so many recommendations, so have promptly downloaded the free standard edition and will have a play.

I am sure you won't regret it. Their technical support is phenomenal too if you ever need them. :)
