John Campbell/Flora McEachen/Mary McMath/Mathieson of Campbeltown
« on: Thursday 04 October 12 01:32 BST (UK) »
Hello, Lucky me, my 3xgf was John Campbell of Campbeltown, Argyll.,!
The information I have sourced is that at the time of his marriage to Flora McEachen on 08 Jun 1840 at Campbeltown, he was living at Ardnacross, occupation 'Labourer' (Have death certificates of their sons, one being my 2xgf, which shows mother's maiden name as Flora McEachen)

John died on 24 Aug 1861 at Sunk Island, Yorkshire, (Occupation Coast Guard) certificate shows his age as 42 years though in the C1861 age shown as 43 years and C1851 as 33.  The best fit I have found is a John Campbell baptised on 01 Jan 1819, born 31 Dec 1818 Campbeltown with mother's surname shown as Mathieson (Mary) and father as Dugald Campbell a 'coalier' of Drumlemble.

A Dugald Campbell, 'coalier' of Drumlemble married a Mary McMath on 11 Oct 1814 at Campbeltown.  I have been reading on this site that McMath/MacMath and Mathieson are one of the same?  Found other children baptised Campbeltown were Mary, 1815, Janet, 1818, twins Alexander and Dugald 1825 and Angus 1829 though mother's maiden name shown on all as MacMath.

If John & Flora followed the Scottish naming pattern of their children, I would have thought their first born son would have been named Dugald however it was John (my 2xgf) born 13 Feb 1841 at Campbeltown.  Next Elizabeth 1843 (after Flora's mother), then Mary 1847 and Peter 1852 in Yorkshire (named after Flora's father)

Any assistance in helping me sort out this puzzle would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Bonnie

My Gran was Christina Masterton Campbell and Dad was John Campbell Hubbucks . When you go back ( there are lots of James (John)  Campbells there is James Campbell (Waterfoot).Gran had a photo ot the grave stone there and if you look on my tree (its public) you can see a photo of it with  a few certificates etc.Are you in Australia too?,Kind regards Susan

Hello Susan,  Many thanks your email.  Since my post I now have John Campbell seaman's ticket which states that he was born 14 May 1819 in Carradale, Argyll. (and not in Campbeltown as I had previously thought) however I have not been unable to find his baptismal record in either the Saddell or Skipness parishes on the Scotlands People site.  Dash!
I have had a look at your family tree and see you have a James (John) Campbell born 15 Aug 1790 in the parish of Saddell who married a Mary Wilson and you have listed their children - interesting to see that between Catherine born 1816 and Colin 1823 my John would fit in.
John Campbell married Flora McEachen and they with their children moved to Sunk Island in Yorkshire where John died.  Their son John, born 1867, married an Amelia Hodgson and they and their children immigrated to Australia in 1875, so too John's brother Peter, who was a sea captain.
Do you know if any of James (John) and Mary Campbell's sons also came to Australia?
This is really interesting and look forward to corresponding further with you. Bonnie
PS Yes, I live in Australia

Hi Bonny , as far as I know no one else came out to Australia. I have been told that  my gran's dad ( Christina Campbell ) went to Canada with a couple of her brothers but haven't  found out  much more about  That yet. Later  my Uncle Nelson came over  but he was a Hubbucks. I have noticed in the new land registry info available on Ancestry . Com the McEachen family in Waterfoot  .can I ask where you found the Master mariners ticket info please ? Is there a special site ? My grandad James Campbell had his ticket so I may be able to find more about his journey  with more information. I seem to have hit a bit of a dead end going any further back . Are you over east or in the west? Kind regards Susan

Hi Susan, Seaman's ticket for my John Campbell (1819-1861) was found for me by another Roots Chatter person  Will have a dig around and let you know.

The one thing I am trying to find out, and as yet have had no success, is if the Parish records for Carradale, Parish of Saddell in Argyll., for the year 1819 (when my 3xggf John Campbell was born) are available on Scotlands People site.  Unfortunately nothing comes up when I put in his name and the year of birth/baptism ....  My thought was that I could troll through them incase his baptism was missed ... its a long shot but it worth a try.   I see that on your Campbell family you have found the records, for Carradale, all around this year.

I live on the east coast of this big island ... and in the biggest city.  Regards Bonnie
