Hello, Lucky me, my 3xgf was John Campbell of Campbeltown, Argyll.,!
The information I have sourced is that at the time of his marriage to Flora McEachen on 08 Jun 1840 at Campbeltown, he was living at Ardnacross, occupation 'Labourer' (Have death certificates of their sons, one being my 2xgf, which shows mother's maiden name as Flora McEachen)
John died on 24 Aug 1861 at Sunk Island, Yorkshire, (Occupation Coast Guard) certificate shows his age as 42 years though in the C1861 age shown as 43 years and C1851 as 33. The best fit I have found is a John Campbell baptised on 01 Jan 1819, born 31 Dec 1818 Campbeltown with mother's surname shown as Mathieson (Mary) and father as Dugald Campbell a 'coalier' of Drumlemble.
A Dugald Campbell, 'coalier' of Drumlemble married a Mary McMath on 11 Oct 1814 at Campbeltown. I have been reading on this site that McMath/MacMath and Mathieson are one of the same? Found other children baptised Campbeltown were Mary, 1815, Janet, 1818, twins Alexander and Dugald 1825 and Angus 1829 though mother's maiden name shown on all as MacMath.
If John & Flora followed the Scottish naming pattern of their children, I would have thought their first born son would have been named Dugald however it was John (my 2xgf) born 13 Feb 1841 at Campbeltown. Next Elizabeth 1843 (after Flora's mother), then Mary 1847 and Peter 1852 in Yorkshire (named after Flora's father)
Any assistance in helping me sort out this puzzle would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Bonnie
