Help for a complete novice researching Skinner Family
« on: Wednesday 03 October 12 13:18 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have just started researching my family history.
I found what I wanted in the 1911 census but when I go to find a birth
certificate nothing comes up - there are several children listed on the census
eg Stevenson Skinner aged 16
so I entered the name and approximate date.
Can someone advise if there is anything else I can do or advise
of any reason for this happening.

Thanks
Dot

Hi & welcome to rootschat.

You do not mention which site you are using. I should imagine you are referring to Scotlands People.

Which area were the family living in in 1911 and who are other members of the family?

Ev, with the info you found....

There is a Stephen Skinner, aged 6 and with his grandparents, a James and Helen Valentine, in Montrose, Angus for 1901 that could fit with the marriage details you found and possible age at death/birth year for the other entry.

A Peter Skinner married an Annie Valentine in 1895 in Montrose, they are likely parents to the Stephen above you would think?

Dot, what birth places showed for the 1911 census entry you viewed? Maybe if you could transcribe the entry, it might help people trying to piece things together for you on the family you are looking at.

Monica  :)

Just for background and to check with the 1911 census entry you already have, I think this is the Skinner household in 1901 - everyone apart from Peter Snr. showing as born in Montrose:

Peter Skinner 24, General Labourer b. Dundee
Annie Skinner 25
Helen Skinner 6
Peter Skinner 5
Margaret Skinner 3

Address: 6 Ferry St, Montrose

Mmmm.... :-\

I think that the 1901 Skinner family is close, but not the right one. But there is a Valentine connection but via another female Valentine.

Playing around with the free searches on the 1911 census, links up the following Skinners in one household in Montrose (the other group in Montrose for 1911 seems to be the family of Peter and Annie already mentioned):

James 50
Stevenson 16
William 15
Catherine 12
Robert 10
Alexander 7
George 5
Annie 2

Maybe connects with this entry for 1901:

James Skinner 37, Dock Labourer b. Dundee
William Skinner 4 b. Dundee
Catherine Skinner 1 b. Dundee
Mary Valentine 28, servant b. Dundee

Address: 8 Shore Wynd, Montrose

Monica

Added: Possible a late marriage? A James Skinner married a Mary Valentine in 1911 in Montrose....

If James Skinner and Mary Valentine were not married for some time after the births of their children, it could mean that the births may have been registered under either Valentine or Skinner (if James Skinner went along to the registrar to make a joint registration of the birth with Mary Valentine).

Dot, there are for example these birth regs showing in Montrose on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

1895 Stephenson Skin(ner?) Valentine
1896 William Skinner Valentine
1899 Catherine Helen Valentine
