I have not been on the site for a while - trying to update my photo files - and was intrigued to see your post. Brooms churchyard is one of our local ones about which I have been feeling quite guilty. Last time I was in there I seem to remember it looking pretty untidy and decided to concentrate on slightly more user friendly ones nearer to home.

However, since it was a much better day today than it has been of late, I decided to have a look out in the sunshine; I didn't take my cleaning gear as I didn't hold out much hope of success. I was wrong!

With the help of a friend who lives quite nearby we tracked down 5 CWG headstones, one of which was the one you are interested in. It is a bit grubby due to the proximity of trees, but perfectly readable.

I've reduced the file size to put it on Rootschat. If you want the full sized file for your site let me know and I'll send you a copy.

I am currently photographing the headstones in Blackhill graveyard, some of which are for Soldiers from the D.L.I. If you haven't got these, let me know and I'll see what I can sort out.

Hello Pat,
Thank you very much for the photograph the size is fine I have been able to download a copy.Thank you also for your kind offer regarding Consett Blackhill although there are many DLI in this cemetery they are from an earlier period in time to collect those from WW2 gives me problems with over 3000 headstones/memorial panels, to add to them those 11000 from WW1 would be nice but in practice impossible but I do thank you again for the kind offer.
Best

Jim

Jim kindly pointed me in your direction with regard to Consett (Blackhill) Cemetery.

I was wondering if I could impose on you for a picture of the headstone of an Airborne Casualty.
He is John Bardwell, AAC Died 27th May 1944 buried in Section 11, New Ground, Grave 33.

Thanks in anticipation

Andy

There's a block of ground of about 2½ acres in Blackhill graveyard which contains Sections 10, 11 and 12. I'm working my way around this, photographing the headstones. I hadn't quite reached the Bardwell headstone, so I went up this afternoon to photograph it. Unfortunately, today was a bright sunny day with the sun more or less directly behind the row in which this headstone stands, causing severe flare problems. I did the best job I could to get a face shot of the headstone - copy attached.

I also took a shot from above, showing the face at an angle. I don't like doing this as it distorts the appearance, but at least it eliminated the flare. I'll attach it to a second post and you can decide if it's acceptable.

I've attached a PDF of the relevant Burial record, showing the complete entry in the Register.

     Good luck with your researches.

            PatB.

Thank you so much for doing this, the pictures are fantastic. As for the weather you were lucky, it's been raining all day down here in East Essex!

Regards
