1881 Census - Saich
« on: Tuesday 02 October 12 17:58 BST (UK) »
Don't know if it is staring me in the face, but I cannot find the following in 1881:  Florence May Saich 1872 Ruislip, and sister Minnie 1878.    Their mother had died in 1878.  I originally thought their father, Thomas John Saich 1840 Paddington, had also died in that year, but I now think it possible he was alive in 1911, a gardener in Ealing.  If this is so, where is he in 1881, 1891 and 1901?   If anyone fancies solving a puzzle can they have a look for me, I would be very grateful.
Regards Tigger

You have Florence in the 1901, do you, as Matron of The Cottage Hospital in Trowbridge, aged 28?

Florence and Minnie are with their uncle William Saich in Ruislip in 1891. There is a death for a Minnie SAICH in 1893 age 15, so could be the Minnie born 1878.

Can't see them in 1881 either.

Thank you both for looking  8)  One possibility is that, if their father is still alive, they are with him in 1881, and that for some reason they were missed out of the census.   Their sister Annie Elizabeth Saich 1867 is with her grandparents Ann and Charles Churchill at Little Manor Farm, Ruislip so perhaps the other children were with relatives but omitted from the census.  Very frustrating to have this gap in my research >:(  Once again thank you for looking.

One possible step in solving this riddle would be to purchase the death certificate of the Thomas Saich who died in 1878.  The problem that I have is that if he is not your Thomas why are the daughters living with William in 1891.  The element of doubt that possibly points to the wrong Thomas having been identified at the death is the fact that this took place in St Giles district.  However I can find no evidence of another Thomas of the right age prior to 1878.

Good morning David, good to hear from you.  I take it you haven't found them in 1881 as well.   I notice from Florence's marriage in 1903 she lists her father as a farmer.   I know they didn't always add "deceased" and if the Thomas in Ealing in 1911 is our Thomas John Saich where on earth was he in 1881, 1891 and 1901.    As Sarah died in Hendon and was buried in Northwood, if Thomas died in London I wonder why he wasn't buried in Ruislip/Northwood, or perhaps he was.   I am now living in the Czech Republic having moved here last December, so have only just got restarted on research and am trying to tie up loose ends.   My email address is the same.  It would be good to hear from you.

Let me add to the confusion.  On 1 August 1875 Albert Charles Saich the son of Thomas John Saich, gardener, and Sarah was baptised at Holy Innocents Church Kingsbury. Herbert Charles Saich's birth was registered in  Hendon District in Q3 1875.  As we know Herbert changed his surname to Churchill after WW1.

However I can't find the 1878 death that I had previously recorded for Thomas and I am coming to the view that he is still alive in 1911 and he is possibly the Thomas who died in 1920 in Uxbridge District.
