Harlestone Lookup - STAMP - COMPLETED
« on: Monday 01 October 12 16:42 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have just found some Stamps on the FREEREG site in Harlestone that have helped to extend my line back two extra generations. However, I would be really grateful for some clarity on the following, as I don't know how accurate the transcriptions are:

1. The registers only seem to have Stamp baptisms starting in 1721 - is this because there are no earlier recordings, or are the earlier registers incomplete/hard to read? I am particularly interested in finding the birth of Edward Stamp, victualler approx. 1690-1700.
2. I have found that Alice Stamp (nee Kestin(s) was licensee of the Fox and Hounds, Harlestone in 1767, but there is a burial for an Alice Stamp in 1761 - however it mentions her husband being a farmer, whereas he was a victualler, her son was a farmer. Could someone check the details for me please? Do the burials have ages recorded?
3. Are there any Stamps mentioned in the registers after 1783? This is the last entry (burial) on FREEREG?

Basically, I am interested in mention of the Stamps in the registers. I have so far established that all the Stamps in Northamptonshire from this period are linked to the same family. They are all ancestors of mine so I would be extremely grateful for any information, as I am not based near enough to access the registers.

Thank you

Paul Stamp

Hi Paul.

The date of 1721 is the 1st mention of the family in Harlestone on
the Northants Baptism Indexes.

Also noted as STAMPS.

Just looking on Alan Clarke's web site ( noted below this post)
he has just indexed 1650-1699 Northants births and baptisms.

At the time period you are interested in more often than not
only a father would be named on baptisms.

As to early burials it seemed to be up to the Vicar if ages were recorded.

The Fox and Hounds is were Hubby and I spent a lot of our courting days.

Yes we are that old. LOL.  :) :)

Many thanks Sandy!

It would seem that Edward Stamp could have been born in Church Brampton then. I am fascinated to know how my Stamps arrived in Northamptonshire in the first place, as they seem to be the only ones there.

The Alice burial is really curious - I did wonder if it could have been mis written and actually be Ann Stamp's burial (Edward Stamp the younger's wife - farmer.) Or, alternatively a daughter Alice. I got the information about Alice as licensee in 1867 from Margaret Forrest's book Village Roots.

My wife and I briefly stopped off in Harlestone at the weekend, on the way back from holiday, and visited the Fox and Hounds. I imagine it was a bit different in the 18thc.!

Do you know if there is any mention of Kestins or Huets in Harlestone?

Thanks again for such a speedy reply!

Paul

Hi Paul.

Ah Margaret bless her, she was a remarkable lady.

The families as you say do not seem to come from our County,
or certainly not baptising there in the early 1700, maybe as with
Edward in the late 1600's possibly.

If it wasn't so windy outside I would have gone and looked at the
Parish Records for you to see if we could find them in the villages around
Bramptons and Harlestone etc.

The Fox and Hounds has changed greatly in the last 30 years, so in the 1700's
I suppose it was like many an Inn steeped in history, certainly an impressive
sized building and the heart of the village.
