I am constructing a family tree;  I knew Doris Harwood and her brother Fred in Elvetham in 1940, and Connie another cousin in Hartley Wintney.  My grandfather was Edward (1862 - ?1951) but I am trying to get further back.

Hi Edna,

Welcome to RootsChat.  :)

Are these people likely to be still alive?  RootsChat does not encourage posting names and details about living people in order to protect their privacy.

But your grandfather should be a different matter.  Was he a Harwood too?  Apart from the birth and death dates, have you constructed a basic tree based on the information that you already know?  Have you got your grandfather's birth and marriage certificates and found him on the census?  If not perhaps someone can help you with that.

welcome Edna.

How about this lad as your Grandfather? Looking at a map, Elvetham is just SE of Hartley Wintney itself.

HW was also a big Registration District.

1871 census RG10; Piece: 1233; Folio: 5; Page: 1 Town of Hartley Wintney

enumerated on the same page as the White Lion PH at Hartford Bridge, which I suspect is on today's A30, just north of Elvetham.

Willm Harwood 41 Head of Household born Elvetham: an Agricultural Labourer
Martha Harwood 45 Wife born Frimley, Surrey
John Harwood 14 son born Farnham, Surrey
George Harwood 13 son born Elvetham
Jane Harwood 12 dau ditto
Edward Harwood 9 son Hartley Wintney
Elizabeth Harwood 7 dau ditto
Charles Harwood 5 son ditto
Henry Harwood 3  son ditto

Edward's parents marriage:-

Marriages Mar 1854
HARWOOD    William        Farnham    2a   71
SMITH    Martha         Farnham    2a   71

Jumping back to 1851 HO107; Piece: 1680; Folio: 284; Page: 1 Elvetham, Hartley Wintney District, we see Edward's Grandparents:-

all state that born in Elvetham

Chs (Charles) Harwood 47 Head of Household Agricultural Labourer
Hannah Harwood 40 Wife
Charles Harwood 22/7? son
William Harwood 20 son
Jane Harwood 13 dau
Elizabeth Harwood 10 dau
Edward Harwood 7 son
Mary Ann Harwood 5 dau
John Harwood 3 son

As their marriage would seem to be pre-1837, I dont have access to the resources needed to research it in a Parish Register

by 1901, Edward has married a Mary Ann, and is still in Elvetham with his own family:

RG13; Piece: 1106; Folio: 53; Page: 14 Elvetham Parish (now), Town of Hartford Bridge

Even tho' the household has been enumerated, I cant see the original page on which the Indexed names are based to give you more details  ... the last image is Page 12.

Hopefully someone else here will have access to the page via another Census provider

The Index states that they were all born in Elvetham.

Edward Harwood 39 Head of Household born (Hartley Wintney)
Mary Ann Harwood 35 Wife
Rose E Harwood 13
Horace E Harwood 8
Bertie T Harwood 5

Here's Edward's marriage to Mary Ann

Marriages Mar 1887
DENTON    Mary Ann        Hartley W.    2c   241
Harwood    Edward         Hartley W.    2c   241

Thank you all very much;  yes, these are all part of my family and I am gradually adding marriage and death dates, so all the information is very useful.

This would appear to be the marriage of Charles & Hannah.

Charles Herrod m Hannah Maynard 23 Aug 1828, Elvetham.
