Joseph Spunner PALMER arrival in N.S.W.
« on: Sunday 30 September 12 00:17 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the arrival details of Joseph Spunner PALMER born 1816 (Ireland) died 23Oct1868 in a drowning accident at East Maitland.  It was around 1842.  Can someone help with this.
His death certificate has married Mary QUIN at "CHRIST CHURCH DUBLIN" in 1833 - (and my research has marrying again 20Nov1843 at St Josephs Roman Catholic Church, MAITLAND) - (V1843400 123/1843 PALMER JOSEPH S QUINN MARY LK).
Children Jane 1834, Letitia 1837, Salina 1839 and George 1841 were born in Ireland.  The Death Certificate has:
"Children of Marriage": JANE 34, LETITIA 30, GEORGE 26, ROBERT 24, AMELIA 20, WILLIAM 18, EMILY 16, ANNABELLA 14, LIVING; 2 FEMALES DECEASED; and
PLACE OF BIRTH:   GALWAY IRELAND
TIME IN AUST COLONIES:   ABOUT 26 YEARS IN THIS COLONY

The next child Robert Oliver PALMER was born 25Jul1843 at West Maitland NSW(the registration shows his mother as Jane but Mary Quin used both Mary and Jane).

On Trove he was an Immigration Agent and Poundkeeper.
In New South Wales, AUSTRALIA:
Budge of Grenfell
Burge of Narromine
Bridget Celia POULTON
Samuel John Palmer
Elizabeth Spunner
Joseph Spunner Palmer
Mary Quin
Robert James Fitzroy Palmer
Daniel Budge of Orkney then NSW
Tanswells of Narromine
Daniel Burge

I think the 1833 marriage is unlikely and is probably just the date given by the informant as it was just prior to the birth of the eldest child.

Have you found any evidence that the first three children were born in Ireland to Joseph and Mary/Jane?

Do you have marriage certs for Jane, Letitia or George to see where they said they were born , or death certs to see how long they had been in the colony?

Hi Debra

The first marriage could be correct. Sometimes Catholics who married "out of the Church" got re-married in a Catholic church at a later stage.

My own parents did this in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia in the 1950's which meant that I attended their wedding in my teenage years.

This possible death of ROBERT confirms the mother may have been MARY,(this time using her other name ???)

REG 7135 YR1934  PALMER  ROBERT Parents  &  JOSEPH S  MARY  at HURSTVILLE
