Orphanages in Dublin 1911?
« on: Friday 28 September 12 16:40 BST (UK) »
My great uncle Patrick went to America in about 1910 and left at least one boy if not two in an orphanage before going.

On the census I don't know how to get the orphanages to come up as I don't know the names of any orphanages. The name search is giving me nothing.
This has happened on other occasions when searching for a Toole gave me nothing until I looked at a street and found that Toole had been transcribed as Loole.

It is in fact a King I am looking for Patrick born 30 June 1907. All the Patricks I found in Dublin at the time around the same age do not correspond to him.

Does anyone know the name of Dublin orphanages which would have been situated the nearest to Saint Andrew's Parish in Westland Row?

In the 1901 ireland census The William Henry Elliot Home @ 166, 167,168, 169 Townsend St Dublin (Trinity Ward)  has a Charles King there, also there in 1911.

In the 1911 census @ 24.3 Townsend St (Trinity Ward)
Nicholas Walsh 70, Ann Walsh 75, both born Dundalk co Louth.  Margaret King a. 16 , b.Dublin Grandaughter
Edward King a 19, b. Dublin Grandson.

As far as I can see the Westland Row you mention is in Trinity Ward. :)

The little boy Patrick was only born in 1907 and I know where the rest of his uncles and aunts were in 1911. I was told that the mother had her parental rights taken away and that the boys were put in an orphanage as in those days children were not given to a father on his own - they did not think fathers could care for young children and work.
I am beginning to think I have been a victim of family legend as maybe the story was not true and it was told to cover up the fact that my great uncle may just have abandoned his wife and children!!

The institutions with a P K were two hospitals, and workhouse.

Thank you both for your help and for looking for me.
