1841/51/61 lookup please
« on: Saturday 28 May 05 09:56 BST (UK) »
Hi,
This is a difficult request, but I'm looking for a family in Ludford. >:(
They are Richard Harris (father)
Jane Harris (wife and mother)
Richard Holland Harris (son) born Ludford 1820, married and moved out mid1840s to Herefordshire, then Warwickshire.
Thomas Atkins Harris (son), born 1825, married 1848 and moved to Herefordshire.
I would like to know any info re Richard Harris Snr. born when, where and doing what?
The same for wife Jane.
If you can't find them as a family in 1841 then on their own in 51/61 would be fine.
Unfortunately I have no idea when they died.
A big ask, I know, but help would be very grateful!!
Thanks  :)

Hi Wayne

I don't have access to the 1841 or 1851, unfortunately!

However, from the 1861:

RG9/1831, folio 108, page 2
Balls Yard, Leominster

Thomas A Harris Head Married 38 Hairdresser born Salop Ludlow
Mary Harris Wife Married 33 Dressmaker born Hereforeshire Orelton
Marian Harris Daughter 8 born Herefordshire Leominster
Adah (looks like that on the image) Harris Daughter 3 born Herefordshire Leominster
Lucy Harris Daughter 2 months born Herefordshire Leominster

RG9/1824, folio 123, page 28
6 Hollywell Place, Aston, Warwickshire

Richard Harris Head Married 41 Painter & Glazier born Salop Ludlow
Ann Harris Wife Married 40 born Hereford Leominster
John Harris Son 12 Scholar born       "             "
Richard Harris Son 9 born Warwickshire Aston
Jane Harris Daugter 6 born     "                  "
Robert Harris Son 1 born         "                  "

I am having a bit of a problem trying to find the parents in 1861.  Do you have any idea of their years of birth?

I don't know if you know exactly where Ludford is exactly.......it's about a mile south of Ludlow.

Thanks Jan,
I appreciate you taking the time to look that up. I only have the parents names from the IGI site because of the Atkins middle name and their birth in Ludford, which I believe is separated from Ludlow by the river Teme(?).
Of course there are too many deaths in Ludlow in general for Richard Harris and Jane Harris to know which is which and I can't seem to find them anywhere.
Anyway thanks again for your help.

Hi Wayne,
In 1851, there is a Richard Harris, a widower, aged 61 (b 1790) lodging with the John Jackson family on Vicarage St. in Leominster. Richard was born in Ludlow and is a gardener. His son, Robert, b 1829, is also lodging in the same house. Robert is unmarried and is a shoemaker.

I think this Richard could be a possibility, especially as his son Richard, also has a son named Robert.

The ref is: HO107/1981 Folio 185 Page 36

Do you need Richard Jr and Thomas in 1851?

Hope this helps,
India

Hi Wayne

Late to the party and bringing bad news I’m afraid.

I’ve checked the 1841 for the Ludford and surrounding area and can see no trace of your Harris family.

Just to mention that you are correct about Ludford being separated from Ludlow by the River Teme and Ludford Bridge (rebuilt in the 15th Century). For a picture of Ludford Bridge try the following ref:

Good luck with your hunt.

India and John,
Thank you for taking the time to look up that information for me it is really useful. (India you really do keep coming up with breakthroughs for me!)
From John's information about Ludlow, I'm sure that the family moved to Leominster pre1841. The place of birth of Robert in 1829 might help here.
Yes India, I'd love to know the whereabouts of Richard Jnr and Robert in 1851 (or even 1841 if you have it). They are almost certainly in Aston and/or Leominster.
Thanks again both :)

Hi Wayne,

Well, I'm not having much luck with this lot!.

I did find Thomas on the 1851...still in Leominster.

Drapers Lane, Leominster, Hef
Thomas Harris  Head  28  Hairdresser  Salop, Ludlow
Mary Harris  Wife  24  Dressmaker  Hef, Leominster
Jane Harris  Dau 1  Hef, Leominster
HO/107/1981 Folio 143 Page 23

I have looked every which way for Richard Jr with no luck. The handwriting on the 1851 cesus for Leominster is awful so he may well be there but has been mangled in the index!

Richard Snr's son Robert was born in Ludlow too per the 1851 census.

I guess your best bet is to get a look up for 1841 Leominster.

Happy hunting,
Cheers,
Indi
