Fuller Surname Help Please
« on: Friday 28 September 12 15:35 BST (UK) »
Hello
I am new to researching English records.  I am researching William Fuller born February 1876, he says in West Ham, Dorset on the Canada 1911 census.  Of course there is no such place, but West Ham in Essex is where he married Rosa Maud Cuffley December 11, 1901.  The couple had two children born in West Ham before emigrating in 1909. William states on the passage record that he is going to a job on the railway, his former job in England is mentioned but I am unable to decipher.

In searching the West Ham census for 1901, I found Rosa Maud in CanningTown, Plaistow, Dist 47.  I did find two Williams, one living with mother Mary Ann in District 18 but birthplace is Stepney, mothers birthplace is Dorset which could be a clue.  His occupation is Omnibus Conductor and there is no further link to 1911. The link to 1891 shows his name as William Henry b1876 Stepney, living in Edmonton, Middlesex with parents James and Mary Ann.
When I searched the BDM for this William Henry I find he is indeed born first quarter of 1876 but registered in Surrey, so I am thoroughly confused.
Would someone be able to look up the marriage in 1901 and confirm that James is the father of my William.  Many thanks
Karen

What is his occupation at the 1901 marriage?
What address did he wed from?
What names witness?

I don't have the marriage certificate. All the info I have is that they married at West Ham last quarter of 1901 on BDM.  On the birth registration of a Canadian child their marriage is listed as December 11, 1901 in West Ham Essex.
Rosa Maud Cuffley's father was John Benjamin.
I am assuming that William had some sort of background on a railway or tram as he had a job to come to in Ontario on the railroad in 1909.  The Passenger list says Pitz or could be Citz worker as his occupation in England.
Sorry, that is all I have.

I have found a William Fuller on the 1901 Census.  This would have been taken before his marriage and he is living with his widowed mother and his siblings.  His occupation is down as Omnibus Conductor and states that he is born in Stepney, his mother was born in Beaminster Dorset.  This could be the one you are looking for.

Hi Kate: Yes, I have put that William at the top of my list.  Previous census he is living with mother, Mary Ann and father James but I cannot confirm that my William's father was James and that is why I am asking if someone could help me with the marriage cert info.
The William you refer to has a second name of Henry.  I recently spoke to the granddaughter of the William I am searching for and she does not recall her grandfather ever using a middle name nor is it on his headstone, emigration information or the 1911 Canadian census.  Consequently,  I hesitate to claim the William living with Mary Ann as the man who emigrated to Canada without concrete verification.
I am asking if anyone has access to Essex marriage records could they look up the marriage of the couple and tell me the groom's father's name.
Thanks so much, Karen
