Highgate cemetery lookup
« on: Friday 28 September 12 15:11 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I found a biography of the second husband of a VERY elusive ancestor on http://www.hydrobharat.nic.in/pdf/charting.pdf

The text of interest is:-
"CAPTAIN RICHARD LLOYD Captain Richard Lloyd I.N. Born in 1798, Lloyd joined the East India Surveying Establishment under Captain Daniel Ross, whom he eventually succeeded. Until then he remained his first assistant. Captain Lloyd died on the 19 th of November 1877, aged 79. An old surveyor and brother officer, writing of his last days, says “I had seen him as lately as November 5 th , and then he had quite recovered his memory, articulation, clear sight, and as we spread charts before him, he pointed out with his poor helpless fingers – deformed and twisted with rheumatic gout – various circumstances connected with his former work, and seemed to retain as vivid a recollection of all he had surveyed as far south as Mergui, as if he had just come on shore. It is curious, however, he had never kept a single copy of any of his charts.” “On the morning of the 20 th November I received a note to tell me he had died the previous day, and on Saturday, the 25 th , I was one of the seven persons who stood at the grave in Highgate Cemetery; and there the good old veteran rests, with scarcely room for a headstone to indicate the spot, so closely packed are all the spaces. I think we might inscribe to his memory, ‘Sans peur et sans reproche.’ His works will be his only memorial – they are surely the best.”

So.....my ancestor re-married (to Richard Lloyd) in 1854 and subsequently died before the 1861 census, as the above Richard Lloyd was widowed again by then. Both their first spouses died in India.

**I was wondering whether anyone had access to the Highgate cemetery inscriptions, and could find Richard Lloyd's inscription (perhaps the above text suggests that there is none?)? Even more specifically, I am wondering whether he shared a graveplot with his second wife Emily Sarah (my ancestor), and if his inscription includes her information.**

Thanks for taking the time to read.
All the best,
Karina

You can apply via the Cemetery website but the cost is extortionate:

I have supplied the link in case you won lotto last week.  :)
Seriously though, I'm sure the fees go towards maintainance and upkeep of the cemetery, so a very worthy cause.  :)
