I'm assuming he married after he arrived in the United States. I have no information on Joseph. I am not living in the United States, so my ability to obtain the necessary information is slow-going. I have found him in census records, but I've relied on process of elimination as far as passenger lists.  Opatówek came from one passenger list that seemed to match up with the info I previously had.  I've hit a wall with this information.

Hi Jackie

So you have Joseph in the 1920 and 1930 censuses?

There are some useful columns in them:

1920
Citizenship
Column 13; Year of immigration
Column 14; Naturalised or Alien
Column 15; If naturalised, year of naturalisation

1930
Personal Description
Column 15; Age at first marriage

Both 1920 and 1930 have place of birth of individuals and their parents.

If Joseph was naturalised there could be naturalisation records with more information.  Age at first marriage should help establish where he was when it took place.  I take it you know who he married?

Unfortunately my Ancestry sub lapsed some time ago so I can't look up anything in the USA.  But if you don't have access yourself but can wait, I can look some things up at the National Archives; there is world-wide access there.

Unless someone else can see any records for this Joseph?

There is a WWI draft registration card dated 5 Jun. 1917 for Joseph Malecki of 1372 Broadway, Buffalo, New York.  It says that he was born 8 Apr. 1893 in (what looks to me like) Opatonek, Russia.  He was single, and his occupation was butcher.

If that's him, he also appears on the Social Security Death Index (available at www.familysearch.org) with a death date of March, 1964.  Based on this information, you would be able to order his original Social Security application, which should include place of birth & parents' names (if known).  There is further information about that here:  http://genealogy.about.com/od/online_records/a/ss5_request.htm

If the guy I found is the right one, there is an obituary for him on www.fultonhistory.com.  It says he was the brother of Leon, Anthony, and Mrs. Albina Sobczyklewicz, all of Poland.

There is a mention of him here:  http://ampoleagle.com/maleckis-meats-promotional-item-brings-back-memories-p6009-202.htm

Thank you, thank you!! This is my family. My great-grandfather did, in fact, start the Malecki Meat Company. You have been a blessing! Thank you for your help!

Regards,
Jackie

Try searching for the exact phrase Albina Sobczyklewicz and click on the square that says Fuzzy searching -- Fuzziness 1.  It should be the only result.

Hi Jackie,

I am the granddaughter of the youngest brother of Joseph Malecki. I have been interested in the topic for many years. I live in Poland. I know Opatówek. I can't believe someone else is searching the family :-)).
