Hi

Some first names, places and dates would be helpful  ;)

If you go onto the National Archives site ( http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ ) and enter "Malecki" in the search box at the top right hand side, there are 19 results, mainly applications for naturalisation in the UK.

Naturalisation records are useful as they usually give dates and places of birth, occupations, children's names and ages, and parents' names.

Do you mean Opatówek near Kalisz?

give the LDS (Mormon Latter Day Saints filmed lots of parish registers all round the world and make them available at their centres) Catholic BMD film holdings for Opatówek.

If it is this one, then it falls within the Poznan Project area - http://poznan-project.psnc.pl/ - and you may be able to find marriages of your ancestors on this site.  I suggest you use the Extended Search section and put the surname in the Groom's box then select the region that includes Kalisz.

Or is it Opatowiec, Pińczów, south of Kielce, at one time part of the Russian empire?

The list of LDS films for Opatowiec are here:

Thank you all very much! Well, the only information that I have is, my great-grandfather's name was Joseph A (Josef) Malecki. He was born 8 April 1893, and I believe he was born in Opatowek. I do not have any points of contact on my paternal side, so my search for this side of the family has pretty much been a long road filled with guesses and dead ends!
Cheers,
Jackie

Hi Jackie

Did Joseph emigrate?  Where did his descendants end up?  Was he Catholic?  If it was Opatówek near Kalisz and he was Catholic then LDS Film No 2092218 may contain his baptism record.

You may find that the surname Malecki is written as Małecki in Polish records.

A million thank you, Gaie!

He did emigrate to the United States in either, 1912 or 1913. His descendants ended up in Buffalo, New York. He was, indeed, Catholic. I am unsure if Opatówek was where he was from. I'm definitely going to have a look at the baptism record- hopefully it will shed some more light on the subject!

Did Joseph marry before or after he emigrated?  Do you have his marriage record?  If so, does it show his father's (and/or mother's) details?  Have you found him in US census records?  Passenger lists?  Did he emigrate on his own or with any other family members?

Where did Opatówek come from?  Oral history, a written record?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but the more info you obtain from records that are easier to access, the better your chances of finding the right records in Poland/Prussia.
